I have always wanted to upgrade my pre-built computer for the past year, but I decided that building a computer from the ground up will cost me less than buying a pre-built one. So, setting my budget to $1,500 for my monster, I went through NewEgg and picked out all the components. The total for my computer came out to $1,484.95 without shipping. I'd say I'm pretty happy with this. Here are the components I chose:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Winchester 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail
ASUS A8V-E Deluxe Socket 939 VIA K8T890 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR400 (PC3200) Dual Channel Kit - Retail
Western Digital Raptor 73GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM
Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache Ultra ATA133 Hard Drive - OEM
ATI Radeon X800XL 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI-Express x16 Video Card - OEM
SAMSUNG Black 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM IDE CD-ROM Drive - OEM
LITE-ON Black 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 4X DVD+R DL IDE DVD Burner - Retail
SONY Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive - OEM
Logitech X-230 32 Watts 2.1 Speaker - Retail
ViewSonic E90B Black 19" CRT Monitor - Retail
Microsoft CA9-00001 Black PS/2 Standard Keyboard (Mouse Included) - OEM
THERMALTAKE SViking VA4000BWS Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail
Rosewill Value RV500S ATX 500W Power Supply - Retail

What do you guys think? I'm also going to overclock it too.

Someone's going to jump in here and dis that Rosewill PS, but I really like them and have had no problems with them. They are very quiet and I feel that they are the best bang for the buck.

However, for only slightly more, you could get a Rosewill with a higher +12V amperage rating. I would go for that. But it looks like you'll be getting an LCD fan with the deal.

If you're going to overclock, you're probably going to want different memory. I'll leave it to those more knowledgeable to make their recommendations.

Edit: Someone else is going to jump in to tell you that forum rules only allow bumping at no less than four hours. But I wouldn't do that. ;) And welcome, by the way!!!!:)

You would want a DFI mobo, a stronger powersupply (antec, fortron, enermax etc.) and ocz value vx for good overclocking.

The value vx is $104 dollars for gig (512x2) on newegg just incase you don't know which one.

A8V-E? Are you kidding? No way. Read around for the horror stories on that board. Stability issues... etc! Try the A8N-E.

Oh, sorry. One more thing:
THERMALTAKE SViking VA4000BWS Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail <--- I heard this case was pretty loud.
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Winchester 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail <-- get a VENICE core, not a Winchester. It's the latest
Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache Ultra ATA133 Hard Drive - OEM <-- I've heard lots of ppl having problems with maxtor. Try Seagate or Western Digital.

Other than that. Pretty good.

ditch the raptor and spend the money on a better psu, cpu(venice), memory (vx value as mentioned). the raptor isn't worth it IMHO

If wanting to overclock def get an aftermarket cooler, like a Zalman CNPS7700-CU.
