I'm looking to build myself a new AMD system. I've been a long time INtel fan, but I felt that the cost/performane ratio of AMD is better so I'm lookig to get into the AMD side of things. I was thinking about the Shuttle AK35GTR, but my feeling is that I shoul spend a little more for a the motherboard and go for something that has a strong name behind it's product, like Asus or ABIT. any suggestions? I would like it to be ATA 133 but I don't htink there are many mobo's besides the shuttle that have ATAT 133.

I'd definitely recommend the Abit or Asus over the Shuttle. Somehow Shuttle got the bronze in Anand's review, but it should have been close to the bottom, in my opinion.

a7a266-e isnt a "higher" model then the a7v266-e, its just different

they are both being currently produced, the a7v is based on the via kt266a chipset, and the a7a is based on ali magik1 chipset

We had a brief look at the board here as part of out KT266A round-up. It performs quite well actually.

I would recommend the IWill XP333, or basically anything that doesn't have a VIA chipset.

If you definitly want ATA133, then go for the Abit KR7A, but for a more cost effective option, go for the EPoX 8KHA+ but this does, however, only have 3 DDRRAM slots. I also have only seen a few Maxtor and some other drives that run at ATA133. but yeh, get the Abit, even if it is a bit more expensive.

Thanks,

Yeah I bought a 60 Gig maxtor ATA 133, and the Abit KR7a look really good to me. I'm seriously considering it, but I'm not sure what's a good price for it. I think I saw it for $150 on pricewatch.

You've obviously never owned a VIA-chipset based motherboard. :D :p

Like I said before, I've been an INTEL person most of my time so I know nothing about AMD or any of the associated Chipsets. A little elaboration would help. Thanks!

VIA chipsets are notoriously buggy, and their damned 4 in 1 drivers always seem to cause more problems than they end up fixing. I recently had a KT266A chipset board (Soyo Dragon Plus), and it was the biggest pile of crap that I have ever owned. I will never own another VIA chipset board because of that experience. I personally like the nForce chipset, but the aLi is a good option as well.

Well I own two machines with the Soyo Dragon Plus and they both run fine with no bugs. Sometimes you get bad boards, its not always the chipset.
