This is pretty much the same system that I have, except I'd like to recommend some other items that may or may not put you over the $1000 mark. First off, I'd go with the Crucial 128MB PC133 Cas2 memory. I got 2 of them for about $70-80/each shipped. For probably an extra $10, you can get the Abit KT7-RAID instead of the Asus A7V. What you get for the extra $10 is a built-in RAID controller and a better slightly better board. Instead of the Maxtor, I'd recommend the IBM 45GB EIDE ULTRA ATA/100 LP DESKSTAR 7200RPM 75GXP at buy.com. I believe those are $176.95-$30 coupon=$146.95. Also good is the IBM 30GB EIDE ULTRA ATA/100 LP DESKSTAR 7200RPM 75GXP for $149.95-$30=$129.95. Add something so you can use the $30 off $150 coupon. These IBMs are the best in the market. Not sure how much the Netgear NICs are, but I've seen them Linksys Network in a box kits for under $20 in recent deals if you missed out on the previous deal where they were like $5 after rebates. You get Two Linksys 10/100NICs and a 5 port 10/100 hub. Build this system, and it will kick ass!

A couple of *very* minor nits about the keyboard (I wasn't look for them, honest!... I just happen to have the same one):

It has 18 programmable hot-buttons on the top, and 2 USB ports built-in to it so you can hook up things like a digital camera, flashcard reader, or any USB device up-front instead of having to reach around the system to hook up a USB device. It also provides 2 extra usb ports this way making your system have 4 which is good for future expansion. If you don't want the ms keyboard, simply don't order it and pick up a generic \$10 keyboard at the computer store you go to for the case. >>
You really can't hook "any" USB device to it because it's not powered, so if the device needs to draw more than a minimal amount of power from the port, it won't work. It wouldn't accept my Logitech Wingman Rumblepad, but I could put my Epson 1200U scanner on it without a problem. No problem either for my mouse, like yours the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer USB Optical.
Also, you really only get a net of 1 extra USB port, because of course if you want to activate the ones one the keyboard, you have to use up one on your PC to plug it in.

Section 1 will be the current guide, modified for readability.
Section 2 will be an area linking reviews for all the components, and links to main pages of manufacturer and merchant sites used.
Section 3 will be a FAQ-style question with questions I've been asked in email and their answers, as well as some new-to-computer-building/deal-getting info.
The site will get a more pleasant thing to look at than just the current black/white and a menu bar and some organization... I'll update it once it is complete which will probably be a few days while I figure out the best way to do it and the way to have it easiest to keep updated and understand for new people. I'll have a large portion of it set by the end of the weekend pretty much, and finish it up quickly thereafter.
What I will NOT be doing with it is making it a deals site. I'll post up ultra-hot deals individually if warranted, but the site is going to mainly be on building a system or finding a good deal on a specific part, but not tons of deals for every single thing out there and every single deal on the parts. The main idea of the site is to be a guide for people newer to dealfinding or who want to know the best way to get the parts for a computer they're building and why each part's a good value for the $1,000ish price of the entire system. Seriously, most people don't need a RAID setup. The target audience of the site isn't likely to be needing a hot deal on a network kit that is going to be on sale for 2-3 days only at a hot deal price, and if they do it'll be posted when it's there... the main thing for the site is going to be what I said before, though. Just putting it in perspective for people on what it is going to be. If you want deals on every single hot deal that comes up you already know where to look if you're reading this although the site will obviously have links to the better deals up inside of its guide if you want to find one really quickly rather than sifting through the forums and other sites .

I think this is a good idea. Everybody at work comes to me before they make a purchase and asks where they should buy it knowing that I'm addicted to some site on the internet that shows me where to get the best deals. Its getting to be a hassle. I would love to point them at one site to pick through. Hey, I point them to anandtech>forms>hot deals, but they don't seem willing to search for what they want.

Man I really really miss system.techdeals.net(closed down about 4 months ago) which had the best deals found at the Hot Deals forum for every single component out there. Whoever was maintaining the site did a wonderful job at it and if you do read this post, hope you get back to helping your fellow HOT DEALERS with putting up & maintaning the site once again.
Newbie question: I am familiar with the individual parts of a PC. But to put all the pieces together from scratch for a new system like the one suggested above I would be totally clueless. Can anyone suggest a website or book that could assist me in putting the pieces together. Thanks in advance.
