Google for rescue societies for a breed you are interested in. They usually link to local organizations that will show you if they have animals waiting for homes.
From my experience petfinder is pretty decent about linking to local humane societies and shelters. But you will want to check the local site itself to make sure that they still have that animal available.

A friend of mine got a puppy from a kennel in Missouri. Had her flown to Atlanta. He was looking for a specific breed though.

Sunny View Kennel is a puppymill. Please do not buy a puppy from a puppymill, petshop or backyard breeder. OP - if you are looking for a specific breed, try searching for a local breed club and look for breeders that way. Real breeders breed for the betterment of the breed.
I found that the shelter near me had some animals up on their site but some were not. I would try going around to the places and getting a feel for how many they have and how quickly they move them. It will give you an idea of how often you should visit. Keep in mind that if you want a highly desirable breed that they will go very quickly. I ended up being one of the first to look at my dog's litter and one was already reserved when I got there. I reserved the second.
You may want to contact m1ldsl1de I heard he found one near his fence that needs a home. Not sure if he will be very fun to play with though.

Yea, at the shelter I volunteer at, we're working on getting everyone on the site, but traditionally it's just a few as we don't have the time to get everyone up there.
Just noticed that the op mentioned a pug, there's one at the humane society I linked to

They sell 11 different breeds. They require no application(don't care for vet references, if you have a yard, children, allow'd to have a dog where you live, etc). Contract doesn't include spay/neutering dog if not showing, nothing about requiring the dog be returned to them if you can't keep the dog, etc.
Missouri's largest business industry is sadly puppymilling. These folks are disgusting.

Oh absolutely. I agree with that. They typically have behavioral issues and are not properly socialized. I have been researching the best breed for my situation for about 6 months now and finally I am ready to rescue a poor doggy.
But I wont knock those that decide to get a dog from a puppymill. To each their own...

I know you said puppy, but have you considered a 1-2 year old dog ?
There are many great dogs at shelters that people ingore and are euthanized becuase people always want a puppy.
Some people say , I don't know what its background is. What I've found is the older dogs are generally very loving, house broken, and are excellent pets. Its a shame people typically only want 'cute' puppies.
I would ask that you atleast visit the local shelter and see what they have.
Breeders and pet stores are great, but animals there are almost asured a home, whereas the ones at the shelters are often considered dispensable.
