I've been wanting to upgrade mobo, graphics, CPU, and RAM in order to run current-gen games at full, especially The Witcher 2. My price range is $700-$800 with the parts I've been looking at (on NewEgg). I'm concerned about whether my build can run with a 600W PSU, that's where you guys can come in.

I play games at 1920x1200 resolution, btw.

These are the parts I was looking at:

ASRock P67 EXTREME4 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

XFX HD-687A-ZDBC Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150520

Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I72600K
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115070

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM

The RAM is hella pricey, so if I could get recommendations on other types of 8GB RAM I'm open to it. I appreciate any feedback, especially on the PSU part (whether 600W can handle it). I'll be highly annoyed if I won't be able to handle it with my current PSU 😛 But let's see! Thanks.

What's wrong with the i7? Also, please recommend a "beefier" GPU, as I was content with a 6870, but if you have something better in mind, please show.

I'll take another look at RAM on New Egg.

The i7 is $100 more then the i5-2500k but offers less then 5% imporvment in almost every game. If this computer will be used for encoding then sure get the i7 as it will help you a lot. But if it is for gaming there is no real reason to get it. just e-peen.

Also let me recommend a new Z68 motherboard.

And here is some RAM for you to look at. It IS a shellhshocker deal so hurry.

I agree with aphelion and mnewsham. You want to go "lighter" on the CPU (saving $100 for 5% difference in games) and heavier on the GPU (performance scales linearly with price up to a point).

With that in mind, I'd recommend:
i5 2500K $225
GA-Z68A-D3H $130
G.Skill DDR3 1333 8GB $65 SS
GTX 570 $310 AR

This costs $730 AR versus the $780 AR that your original parts cost. It'll perform quite a bit better in games. Oh, and your exiting PSU, while not the greatest, should be fine.

No, no it wont, 600w is overkill ignore any PSU calculator provided by someone trying to sell you a PSU.

That would be my recommendation when choosing a PSU. 🙂

Ah, wow. Interesting! Thanks for that.

Here's what's in my NewEgg wishlist right now (subject to change, obviously)

GIGABYTE GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68

Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231311

XFX HD-695X-CNFC Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150530

This graphics card has an extra gig and is just a little more expensive than the Gigabyte card shown earlier in the thread.

I know this thread's a few months old but I figured I'd resurrect it in case I need to update this "wishlist." I noticed that the Graphics Card is no longer available on New Egg. I have a job now so I'm hoping to finally be able to afford a system upgrade around August. Should I wait for suggestions then, or would a few pointers help right now?
