Hello everyone!!!
This is my second overclock system. I am looking at building an AMD Opteron 248 system. I am wondering if I will be able to overclock this, and to how far. I am looking at getting watercooling, along with x850 video card. I will be running OCZ Gold Series 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM. My First system is a 2500+ mobile xp @ 2.4ghz. With 1GB DDR 333mhz @ 400Mhz. And a geforce fx 5700. Not a bad running system just want a new toy and a new project. If anyone can point me in the right dsirection for a good overclock I will be more than happy. Thank you everyone.

why would you get a 248 if you are only running single cpu? they are designed for dual physical cpu systems iirc, and priced accordingly.

Get a 165 or 170 opty, or an x2.

248's only run on socket 940 mobo's, and none of them that I am aware of, even OC. I have 2, want to buy them ? I want to get 2 285's !

First off, no motherboard takes an opteron 2xx and DDR2, second off, a 248 is a 2 way server/workstation processor, so you would need ECC DDR and a motherboard to handle it. So you would probably not be able to overclock it, as these generaly are server motherboards, and the server market does not exactly have a sector that overclocks.

Opteron 1XX is what your looking for, in which case you need a socket 939 motherboard and DDR. Or if you wait a socket AM2 and DDR2. I suggest an opteron 165/170 as dual core is going to be alot more future proof. Also for motherboards an A8N32-SLI or A8R32-MVP are great boards for these procs. Then just get some nice dual DDR400 with good timings and whatever graphics card your heart desires (7900GT/GTX, or ATI 1900 Series rule).
