Any thoughts? battery life would be a plus, don't need to game, etc. I'm thinking an IBM x series but not sure

Used fujitsu p 20xxs are pretty inexpensive (on ebay), have great battery life, swapable drives(battery x2 is a reality), and great build quality.

The Transmeta processors are really, really #@@#$ slow. You don't need much for Office tasks, though.

I recall some Fujitsu barebones on eBay for about 60$. They were short a few parts, and you'd need to add a battery, hard drive, and RAM, but once you did, you'd have an ultraportable laptop with a touchscreen to boot.
(I'm currently bidding one one myself.)

If you don't mind an external optical drive, you can get a Latitude C400 or X300 for a little less than $350. Or if you catch the right auction a 3200 series Averatec can be had for around $350 and that has an internal optical drive.

For $350, get a decent PDA or Blackberry. For a good ultra-light notebook at that price, it has to have fallen off a truck somewhere. :)

I have a blackberry.

seems like several decent used options for an ultra-portable in the price range
