FOUND IT!
Not exactly NES, it was in the old Korean console Jaemix back in late 80s. Most of the games of Jaemix were direct ports from NES and I assume the game is Japanese based on the gameplay/quality.
In the game, you play as a tomb raider searching for jewels. The format of the game is like an action puzzle with the interface reminscent of Donkey Kong 1, you walk around left and right and climb stairs to multiple platforms.
The game is won when you collect all the jewels without getting touched by ghostly mummy-like figures. You can also pick up and throw swords and kill the ghosts but they will spawn in short time again...

The game was much more evolved than Lode Runner because the sword throwing action was quite fun. And different colored ghosts had different abilities.
*The pink ran around extra fast
*Blue was extra slow but deceptively climbed the stairs much faster
*Purple was immune to swords or something (it would go right through)
Any guesses? I had the best time playing this game back then
