looking for the most reliable 2.5" SATA drives

Size 200~320 gb range.
Application will be a low power file server, prefer 5400 rpm drives for lower heat/power consumption.
I'm favoring quiet and reliablility over speed.

There is virtually no difference in heat, power, or noise characteristics of 5400 and 7200 RPM laptop drives. Even on battery the impact is essentially nil, & in a powered file server it's even less of a concern. You simply aren't going to notice any difference when it's in a case, so unless the cost difference is an issue just get the faster drives.

There are 2 or 3 good options in 320 GB 7200 RPM at around $90.

Currently the Seagate 7200.4 series of laptop HDDs is among the lowest power and they're definitely one of the 3 good options. WD is likely another although I haven't checked on their latest. #3 I dunno... Possibly Toshiba or Samsung. I personally wouldn't go with Hitachi as the last drive I had from them sucked so much power I couldn't get it to spin up over USB even with supplementary power.

I used a WD Scorpio Black, 320GB/7200RPM very reliably in my T60 and my T510 laptop. Definitely a good performer.

i went through wd 500 gb blue, seaget 500 gb and finally settled with hitachi 500gb 7200 rpm. and it is real quick and quiet.
