I wouldn't waste your time with the old computer. You'd be better off getting a new one and getting an extended warranty if you want one.

ok well i found out that now it could easily be the motherboard, and if i send it in theyll test to see if its jsut the video card for 199.99 and then if they still have to do work its 299.99, and i would be willing to spend 199.99 to get it all fixred and working, but there is no way to "check" to see what it is without paying.

It's $99.99 for the 2yr. extended warranty on the 6020gz from bb. It covers parts & labor for 2 years and I've been told that they will give you a new battery once a year. The advantage to the bb warranty is that you can drop your laptop off in store without having to mail it in to the manufacturer, but I opted out of the warranty. I'm not sure if that was a smart or dumb thing to do?

The BBY warranty is great IMO, far better than the 1 year std warranty and better than other retailer warranties.

You do get a new battery every year, 24/7 toll free support (Gateway's support is long distance), and they can diagnose your machine in any BBY store. They do have to send it off for major repairs, around a 2 week turn around time (I sent a desktop to Gateway 2-3 weeks ago, nothing yet). You do have 14 days to go back and get the warranty ;) $99 for 2 years is a steal
Note: they don't cover accidental damage or abuse, but they do cover normal wear and tear.

You can get a 1.6 GHZ pentium M for 699 with a 90 day warrenty though. If your careful with your laptop, the extra battery life will really help.

I'm thinking maybe I should go back and get the warranty. I didn't have the extra $100 at the time, but I asked if I could get it at a later date. They told me I'd have to return it & repurchase it so it's on the same receipt. Do you know how that would work fbrdphreak?

About gateway's phone support, if I was to call them I'd just use my cell phone nights or weekends, but I've contacted them a couple times through chat and they've been extremely helpful.

I don't know if they would actually have to return/repurchase, they can usually just pull up the old purchase and add it on. I think even the 14 days is slightly flexible as they really want to sell these things. Just go back with your receipt and they will take care of it, they shouldn't need the laptop since its only been 14 days and if they tell you otherwise someone is BSing you.

Good to hear about the Gateway support

Im hoping this 6020gz can be a RELIABLE computer for a very long time, i mean with the 64 bit OS coming out in 07, will i still be able to use this lappy with that OS? if not, would getting an Athlon 64 processor fix that? I just want to be ready for the future cuz my parents are like "ure keeping this till college" and im like, um, well ok? and im a Sophmore in HS! so prob. not till college, but for a good time.

HP has some cheap laptops that will perform decently.

Here's the cheapest notebooks of their compaq and HP lines(why do they have seperate lines?)

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopp...mpaq_presario&storeName=computer_store

The M2000Z starting at $529.

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopp...s/hp_pavilion&storeName=computer_store

And the ze2000z starting at $579.

Why did I select these? They both have ATI XMA200 integrated graphics, so you can at least have somewhat decent graphics as most cheap notebooks won't offer anything as good as this.
It's only about as good as an X300SE, but worlds beyond the GMA900 and Radeon 9000s you'll find in most cheap laptops.

Also, AMD's cheap mobile technology is better than Celeron M's in power management...AMD's Turion and Semprons actually support power management, while Celeron M doesn't.

BTW, I think the only difference between the M2000Z and the Ze2000Z is better speakers on the 2000z, plus some extra multimedia software.

The Semprons listed for configuration in each notebook may or may not have 64 bit support...the newest semprons do, but these may not be the newest semprons. The Turions definetely have 64 bit support.

Also, don't choose to have your memory upgraded no matter what laptop you buy, almost all laptops have user servicable memory(unscrew one screw on the bottom and pop in the memory), and it's much cheaper to buy it on your own.(and if you want higher performance you can buy your own harddrive and pop it in on most computers, but it isn't likely to save you any money)

What is the HP from the page before(none of the links seem to work), and what were the sepcs of your Dell?
Why not just see if you can get the Dell fixed?

Im now starting to lean more towards getting my laptop fixed, because the computer, i know i can keep for 3 years, a 699 dollar computer just doesnt seem like it should be my ONLY computer. while a 2 year old 999 dollar computer taht i know i like alot, adn can replace the memory with more and even replace the hard drive i believe, i dunno

Oh, yeah, the two HPs I linked to are faster than both that Gateway and your previous laptop. Your previous laptop only had a 7500, and the Gateway has a GMA900, both of which are much slower than the XMA200 in the HPs.

For the HPs, I'd say it might be worth it to upgrade to the Turions over the Sempron. The Turions will definetely have 64 bit support.
The 2800+ Sempron would be a 2400+ Athlon 64, 3000+ Sempron a 2500+, Turion ML-28 a 2600/2700+, ML-30 a 2800/2900+, and the ML-34 a 3000/3100+. That's comparing to current desktop processors though, your old P4 likely had a slower fsb that current cpus and probably lacked dual channel, which would have greatly impacted its performance.
The brightview is just a better screen, I'd go for it since you have to look at the laptop a lot and it's a cheap upgrade.
The Xpress 200M's productivity ports includes firewire and extra USB, and maybe video out?
The memory upgrade isn't worth it, doesn't rip you off as much as most PC makers do, but it'd be cheaper to buy the extra ram yourself and add it in.
For instance, on Newegg.com, PC3200 DDR memory starts at $44.21 for 512MB, at around $52 you start getting into the decent companies, and 1GB starts at $109.99. HP charges you $75 for 1 512MB stick, and doesn't offer a 1GB stick.

The harddrive you probably won't find much better deals on online(I don't even know if the HP notebooks have user replacable harddrives), but the harddrives they offer are slow. I'd recommend getting the wireless lan option too, and the 12 cell Li Ion battery. Hmm, going with the upgrades I suggested, but leaving the ram at 256MB and the harddrive at 40GB brings the system to just under $700 for the more expensive one(assuming you want the better speaker, otherwise you could get the cheaper laptop). With the cheaper laptop, you could potentially afford to pick up a seperate 512MB stick, and get 768MB ram in your laptop which would be decent.

so ure talkin about the ze2000z, starting at 579 dollars. Do u understand how uncomfortable i feel buying a computer STARTING at 500? But u said it was better then my current computer, in what ways? So wait it would be under 700? hmm not with what i just did, i was using the higher end one though and got to 744 dollars, and was without the battery upgrade, i dont know where ure getting these numbers. Oh wait, i figured itout, cuz i added the upgraded cd drive, because i HAVE to be able to burn cds, and the 8x DVD drive, i dont think it lets me do that. it lets me play cds but it doesnt let me burn them
