ok i have been told to not replace the motherboard on my dell 5100 for 500 dollars, and instead buy a laptop with that 500 or so dollars. If i sell the screen on my dell 5100 i can prob. get more money, so i think 600 and under is good. what do u reccomend?

If $699 isn't out of the question, best buy has the gateway 6020gz. 15.4" ultrabright widescreen, 512mb pc2700, 60gb hdd, cd-rw/dvd, celeron m 1.4ghz, built in wireless, and more.

$600 doesn't give you a lot to work with.

You could get a Dell 1200 with nothing for $594 on dell home, a crappy GQ from Fry's for around $500-600, or a crappy balance from Walmart for about $500.

For $600 or less your best bet would probably be to buy a used one on Anandtech or eBay.

yea sniper seems to think that i can get a 500 dollar laptop but i told him that it was impossible. i could just pay 500 for the replacement of my inspiron 5100 motherboard, and then sell the screen for some more money, but here are the specs on my curretn 5100 that needs a motherboard (dell will make me pay 500 bucks for it).

althought the company Acer scares me away, because there support got an F in mobile magazine, and there comapny just scares me... tis not too bad of a computer. but it is better then my dell 5100 with a new motherboard? HELP!!

sniper suggested that Acer, and also said check out the for sale for trade forum, the hotdeals forum on fatwallet.com, i did all that and found nothin.

Acer has some good deals and they are decent laptops. I've heard a few bad things about Acer support, but I've also heard some good things. Overall, I wouldn't worry; but do not expect a trouble free perfect laptop for $600.

Check out Averatec as well

I might have a $250 laptop if you want :p AMD K6-2 433MHz :Q

that entry level 6000 isnt bad. However, is it better then my current computer?

I'd suggest going to a dell direct store to check out the inspiron 6000 and maybe a couple other laptops you might like. I did, but I liked the gateway 6020gz better and the price was right. The s/h on the entry level 6000 is $50 too.

how is the gateway 6020z better in ure opinion? is either one of these computers better then MY computer?

Either way, your existing laptop is either a 2.4GHz Pentium 4 or Celeron.

A Celeron or Pentium M would be a better choice in either cases if you ask me. A Celeron M might be a little slower than a 2.4 P4, but not a huge difference and the battery life would be a lot better.

The Compaq you listed is a good basic notebook. keep in mind those are all mail-in rebates, you pay like $720+tax up front

yea but u do end up getting the money back, and by the time they give me the money back for the rebates my dad has forgotten about the purchase, so i tell him up front about the rebates, and 2 weeks later he doesnt remember so its all good.

i could also afford this one, because its 550 in the cart once all rebates.

I'd probably go with the toshiba if you have $800 up front. I had the m35x-s109 I bought from bb's black friday sale and I loved it. The only reason I let that go was to make $300 profit and built a desktop off a loaner chip.

yea well this one is the TOS M35X-S163,

but yea toshibas right now are looking pretty good.

I just like the overall look and feel of the Gateway 6020GZ over the look and feel of the Dell Inspiron 6000, but what I really liked it that I was able to get a better deal on the Gateway. For $23 less I got a 1.4ghz celeron m, 512mb, 60gb hdd, and 1yr. standard warranty instead of a 1.3ghz celeron m, 256mb, 30gb hdd, and 90 day warranty.
