With the Brunton, it's so you can read the dial while using the sights. There's a couple different ways to sight with those compasses, and a mirror is required with some of them.

Also in general mostly so you don't have to look 'down' at the compass. Looking 'out' from it is a big advantage a lot of times.

As a geologist, I always loved using my Silva (still have it) and detested when I had to use a Brunton.
