He is probably talking about the Dayton pre-built <$150 subs, and last time I heard, the more recent versions aren't that good. Worse than the previous ones, anyway.
But yeah, DIY is the best bang for the buck...but if you cant DIY, then I'd check out a used SVS like Jello suggested.
My old dayton 10" is kind of falling apart now according to its current owner, but I've heard very good things about the upper end ones
EDIT: one more random comment... if you're the kind of guy that's going to get another upgrade sooner or later, you might want to consider resale value. It's going to be pretty easy getting most of your money back if you go used SVS, but a DIY is going to be pretty hard to sell in comparison.
