Either a Dayton or SVS IMO, Daytons have bad build quality
First time I've ever heard that.

He is probably talking about the Dayton pre-built <$150 subs, and last time I heard, the more recent versions aren't that good. Worse than the previous ones, anyway.

But yeah, DIY is the best bang for the buck...but if you cant DIY, then I'd check out a used SVS like Jello suggested.

My old dayton 10" is kind of falling apart now according to its current owner, but I've heard very good things about the upper end ones :)

EDIT: one more random comment... if you're the kind of guy that's going to get another upgrade sooner or later, you might want to consider resale value. It's going to be pretty easy getting most of your money back if you go used SVS, but a DIY is going to be pretty hard to sell in comparison.

Really? I haven't heard much, but everything I've seen suggets that these newest budget dayton subs are of lesser quality than the previous ones (like your old one).

*shrugs*

I've heard great things about the Acoustech H-100 though. You can pick it up off ebay for <$250 including shipping, I believe.

Edit: That is a valid point, but DIYers end up building subs that they are happier with, in the first place. ;)

I mean the titanic III models have good quality, not the newer versions of the budget ones.

Too bad you're not in Toronto. I'd sell you my SVS cheap. :) (I live in a condo, so I can't use the sub. :()

My wife got me a 10" Dayton Titanic III kit from Parts Express. They offer a pre-built version for like $150 more, but it only takes about 20 minutes to build, so you might as well (if you can use a screwdriver you can build the thing lol). It sounds great! It's almost overkill for my home theater. I wouldn't go much bigger unless you have a really big room; the 10" is usually at 1/4 in my living room! :Q

I just moved out of an apartment :D My current problem is that I'm not allowed to put my bass shakers in the new furniture, so I have to sell them (see FS thread below lol). But at least I have a real sub now!! :D

Oh, yeah. I haven't heard bad things abot the Titanic models. Those drivers/boxes are pretty solid.

but best bang for the buck those new JBL Venue 10/12" powered subs compete with some of the higher end $500+ subs and are in the ~$200-300 range. good down to ~25hz... so still has excellent impact with the stuff you cant even audibly hear. they can be had at best buy. The downfiring sub w/front port is great for hardwood or carpeted floors.

I thought nothing of it when a friend who works at best buy told me about them (I tend to not like mainstream stuff, especially best buy). But I actually took time to listen to them at the store like last month. Anything louder than that would need a pretty large room. although it did have port noise at max volume. couldnt really tell the loudest cuz the best buy ppl started swarming around me giving me dirty looks.
