basement is a better space. paradigm svs and velodyne are all decent choices. Klipsch is an acquired taste. Also, it depends on what line of speakers you buy.

but after doing some more research and thinking harder, i may end up putting it in this room: http://i.imgur.com/RRWHh.jpg

That basement is perfect for a projector and a big ass screen. You could even do a small baffle wall, toss a Danley DTS-Super Spud behind it, and then set some JBL T-8's on top. That system would certainly test out the limits of your homes foundation.

😀

yea the thing is, i don't want a dedicated theater room or anything and want to be able to use that space for other things too, but entertaining things. i doubt i will go the projector route though at this point, but my plan may change once i'm in there lol.

in your search for listning to speakers and subs, depending on where you live you may find someone who may let you demo stuff, there are 2 threads on AVS with lists of what people have, also if you ask in the specific thread for the type of speaker you may get other people as well

Subs

Speakers

thanks for that too, there is a guy in the speaker section that is running the EXACT speaker setup i posted in the OP, who is w/in about 30 minutes of me.

yea some of the DIYs are insane, however ive seen the build threads for most of them and not everyone is going to attempt to build a DIY with TCS LMS 18s, especially considering the drivers alone cost ~$900.

where did you grab that list from soccerman? seems different what what i assumed it was (data-bass.com) which also lists something very similar
http://www.data-bass.com/data?page=systems&col=3&type=0&sort=desc&mfr=-1

similar list with massive DIYs on top. actually looking at the list i had forgotten how good of a sub the Rythmik FV15 is

Grabbed it from a diy build thread at avs

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1275564/15-tc-sound-lms-build

OP could consider infinite baffle subs. The wife would love them, no big ass box in the way and provides loads of low end, all you see is a AC grate on the floor/wall.

Hard to beat Klipsch, I am running mostly from their Heritage line (Quartets and the Academy Center), with SS-25's doing surround.

Keep in mind, the size of your room is a big factor in what will work well and what is just overkill.

I have been to too many homes with 2 or more monster subs and while it 'feels' good, it's a crappy experience as far as realism.

went to a store today and listened to some B&W lower end speakers, the 683's, HTM61 center, In ceiling rears. i watched the beginning of the dark knight. it sounded good, but the center channel was not what i want, i want more. and the sub was WWAAAYYY overpowering, whoever set that needs to fix it.

i then went to another theatre room that had higher line B&W speakers, along with amps to power them. it was the cm9's and the cmc2's for the center. not sure what the rears and sides were or sub (it was 7.2). unfortunately there was technical difficulty and the guy couldn't get the sound working, and since i was on lunch break i couldn't wait around. i'm anxious to go back and hear it.

i then went into a sound room, and again listened to dark knight. he played the most high end speakers they had in this room, which were Golden Ear Triton 3's, SS50C Center. these were NOTICEABLY better than the first set i listened to. unfortunately, there were no subs hooked up so i didn't get the full experience. but the speakers were nice sounding.

so i definitely like going and listening to them. i think im going to go out and buy my favorite bluray and bring it with me when i go places, so i can watch a part i want to hear - storming the beach in saving private ryan.

i just ordered the bluray from amazon to bring with me when i go places heh. should have it monday and can go listen to the b&w's hopefully on tuesday at lunch.

so you are looking for 'home theater' speakers, basically high efficiency with good dynamic range speakers. You should be look at brands like JTR, Procella, MK sound, JBL pro, brands that are known for home theater speakers. Klipsch might actually be a good choice due to the compression drivers. Those speakers you are looking at now are not 'home theater' speakers, as good as they are for music, they would not reproduce explosions, breaking glass sound, etc, realistically.

???

first you say klipsch may be good, then you say the ones i'm looking at may not be good.

but the ones i'm looking at are klipsch.

/confused at your reply.

FWIW i currently own a jbl 5.1 setup that i bought back in 2001 when i worked at best buy. i plan to keep the speakers and setup different zones with them. they are great for music, however they were not the best for movies. at least the center and surrounds weren't.

I think he was talking about the B&W's. As some other's have said the deal with Klipsch is that it's an aquired taste. They are a "hot" speaker. They are incredibly efficient but some people find their style fatiguing to listen to. No question that they work well for dynamic, and high volume demands like movies though.

ah gotcha.

the b&w lower end mains sounded great, i'd only imagine the higher ends would be better. it was the center that didn't sound that great to me.

i also heard some golden ear speakers at the store yesterday which sounded great too, but it was in a room that didn't have an ideal viewing area and the rears were kind of weak.

there is a guy who lives 30 mins away who has the exact setup i have in the OP whom i've been in contact with, and he said i can come check it out in a couple weeks when i have free time.

gonna bring my SPR bluray and look forward to it!

yes, I meant the ones you looked at the store, B&Ws, not sure about goldenear, as I haven't heard the triton line of speakers yet.

the ones i sampled in the theatre definitely weren't the best for sounds like the broken glass and stuff like you are mentioning - like the gun shots, glass breaking, etc. but it sounded like the issue was mainly with the center speaker, not the mains. the center sounded a tad bit muffled, which is how my current JBL system sounds.

but to be fair, those speakers are like 1/2 the price of what i'm looking to spend so i wasn't expecting to be blown away. but to be honest, i was more impressed with them than i expected to be, based on the price point of them.

Just know that room treatments & EQ'ing can make a HUGE difference in sound quality. If you tame the reflections and have good bass trapping even low/mid end stuff can sound fantastic. Also having a room that isolates external noise can make a huge difference in the level of volume you need to supply inside the room.

That's what makes things very difficult in doing comparisons from one shop to the next. Let alone how well they will sound in your house. You just have no easy way to compare speakers objectively unless it is all done in the same place.

gotcha, thanks for that input.

Especially with that first room with the fire place, the open side and the large windows...

after going to demo stuff in a theater like room, and seeing a projector in person for the first time, i'm most likely going to use the 2nd room and put a projector in there.

ran it by the wife last night and she was cool with it. gonna get like a 55" - 60" tv for the other room, just no sound system, or maybe a small HITB type deal.

I know you are a big gaming fan too...throwing an Xbox up on a 100" + screen with a quality sound system is an experience.

That basement looks perfect for that setup. You could get a nice sectional/reclining sofa in there with room for 4-6 people. And depending on how big it is, could set up some bar type games in the back (Mamebox, darts, ect).

Can't wait for Mechwarrior Online
