Looking for something better

Just to be quick, I don't have the money to buy Microsoft Office so I can get Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. The reason I need something better than OpenOffice.org is because the college I attend uses Word and does not support odt file extensions. So I have to save them as doc and do some reformatting when I get to the college, just so my papers will be in proper MLA or AMA format.

As for Powerpoint, all of my notes are done through Powerpoint. I am unable to look at them while at my house which only leaves me with the option to print them out. Printing has become fairly costly with over 150 powerpoint slides (per class), even with 3-6 slides per page. I also live 1½ hours from the college with gas over $3 per gallon. Needless to say, I avoid going to the college on days I don't have class.

I am open to all suggestions other than spend $XXX and buy Microsoft Office.

Have you looked at abiword? It wont help with your problem with powerpoint but perhaps it saves things as a word file a bit better. Can you save as .rtf and then reformat at school? might save your formatting better

I second giving Abiword a shot. It has been around longer and has had MS Word compatibility longer than OpenOffice, so maybe they have the kinks worked out better.

OOOH, or I just had a much better idea! Export the document from Writer as a PDF!! Then transport your pdf to school and print that off.
