Hey guys, I was hoping for some help between 2 laptop systems I'm trying to choose. I'm wondering what the limitations between a last gen and current i7 system would be.

I have it narrowed down between 2 systems. An Alienware system and an ASUS ROG system. The best price I found for the alienware is $1,379 on Newegg. I found the ASUS $1,568 on B&H. On paper, the ASUS looks like the better deal, but the processor is a last gen i7, so I wonder how that would hinder the performance of the unit. Does anybody have any insight that would make this purchase a little clearer for me? I really wanted a 980m card for the extra gig of ram, but I know that a newer processor sometimes outweighs the performance drawbacks of a card with less vram. Any suggestion is welcome. I always wanted an Alienware growing up, which is why I gravitated towards the former, but I've been watching reviews on other ROG ASUS laptops, and they look pretty good as well. I'm not worried about the price difference so much, I just want to know if the ASUS would be worth it with an older cpu. This is probably going to be my main unit for 4 or 5 years, so I want to make sure I grab the right one. Thanks, guys!

For gaming, the difference is negligible the majority of the time. I'd pick the Asus.

The Asus with i7-4720HQ is actually a little faster, and has 16Gb ram & a 980m w/4Gb.. Winner ..

I agree with the above comments.

It might be relevant to ask, is a laptop going to be a significantly better choice than a compact desktop? For the same money, you can likely get a better performing desktop with more storage, a much nicer screen and better user interface. It will also be upgradable and more easily repairable. Is the mobility aspect extremely important here?

For me, it is. I unfortunately am never in one spot, and with my work schedule, I am often away from my home. But the idea of taking a machine with me that I can do work on as well as my leisure time is extremely appealing for me. I know that it's not upgradable for the most part, and that's alright. That's why I'm looking for the best unit for that price point. It's what I'm going to end up using until it becomes completely obselite.

Thank you for the help.
