looking for recording studio software

Im in the process of buying a mixer, mic and amplifier...Now im just looking for some software that I can use on my computer that will let me do everything possible as far as editting, enhancing and recording stuff. Anyone know of any good software? Thanks.
 
Assuming you are using live instruments in combination with VSTi's and/or MIDI, Cubase, Nuendo, Sonar, Samplitude are great options. Pro Tools is another but you need to get their hardware to run it which costs a ton of cash. If you are looking for a free option try Reaper; http://reaper.fm/ it is shaping up to be a great DAW at no cost. It even got a great review in the latest Sound on Sound

They have a wide selection and will even break up the more expensive software into same as cash payments.

I did that setup with a church and it was great.
We tried sound forge first but quickly found out pro tools was easier and had better results.


We used a Maudio 1010LT card with pro tools.
Together the cost is about 449.00
Not cheap but it gives studio quality results.
 
If you are doing any kind of midi editing though, Pro Tools is not the choice. It is amazing for audio only, but midi is somewhat lacking.

Modelworks: what do you use for midi editing?
 
thanks guys...actually I am new to all of this im trying to get started with it. I figured I would buy a mic, amp and mixer first, then look for some software. I think I will eventually add some instruments and play around with that, but my first priority is to be able to edit/mix/filter voice. I downloaded that reaper program and am currently reading on how to use it. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

I will second this. I have this setup at home and it works great.
