Dunno about your area's local banks, but BofA is teh suck.

Here in Cali, I'm really happy with Union Bank of California. (www.uboc.com) I've tried a dozen different banks, and this is the only one I'm really happy with.

Why doesn't anyone like BofA?

I've been with them for 3 years and haven't had any problems and have actually liked having them as a bank.

^^^ I've had opposite experiences.

Been with BofA since 1984 and have never had a single problem. Their online banking is great and getting better.
A friend of mine has been using Union for both personal and business accounts and finally got so fed up with them he moved to Farmer's & Merchant's bank which is supposedly the best one out there.

Credit Union...

Whats that?

It's basically a "not for profit" bank. You usually have to start a savings account with like $50 to buy "shares" in the union.

They usually have less fees and higher interest rates than banks because all they money they make on loans and such are put back into the union after operating costs.

BofA robbed me of $300 bucks out of my checking account back in '96 and refused to correct their error (they counted one single ATM withdrawal of $100 as 4 separate withdrawals of $100 each). I moved my account away from them promptly and have never had a similar problem before or since.
In '99, BofA charged my GF a bunch of NSF fees etc. and caused a great deal of inconvenience because they still hadn't credited her account for her paycheck... which had been directed deposited 10 days earlier! I went with her to the branch to speak to the CSR, who told her that it was common for them to hold onto payroll deposits for 10 days, sometimes even up to 15 days! My GF immediately closed her account needless to say. By the way, she then worked for Norwest (now merged with Wells Fargo), not exactly a fly-by-night employer where the bank should sit and wait for the check to clear....

No WAMU in the deep south?

BofA has too many fees, all different kind of fees, I withdraw money from non-BofA ATM and BA charge me $2 and the ATM charge me $1.5, but it was emergency, no choice. I had BofA for almost 10 years, since I have mortgage with them, I got 2 prima checking for free, and the benifit I am using is unlimited online payment,(I need that 'cos I have at least 20 payments to make every month), a lot of bank and ATM, free small safety box, free cashier check, free check printing (even I wrote less than 10 checks in the previous year). But I recently used their streamline refinance, I am extremely upset, it only take about 5 weeks to close the refi, compare to the BofA refi I did in last Sept and took exactly 4 MONTHS, 5 weeks is very fast, and the story begin, 1st closing doc printed the wrong closing cost by First American title company and I received on July 20, then they suppose to send me 2nd doc at Aug 1 and notary should be my home on the same day, no doc show up, then I called then they should send me the doc on Aug 21, no doc again, I call and they said it will be there on Aug 26, no doc, the 1st call got the reason is NY blackout, 2nd call got the reason is blaster virus, finally I got my closing doc at beginning of Sept, the doc said cashier check required, I call BofA and the rep said personal check oK after he check with supervisor, 2 days later first american title company call and left message said personal check not ok and return the check and request a cashier check. After almost 8 weeks since I received my 1st closing doc, I am able to close the mortgage, BTW, maybe the rep is located in india, that's why they miss communication with the mainland BofA headquarter.

Same here. Just set up direct deposit.

I recently opened a "fun" account with Compass. No fees, including no ATM fees. They'll reimburse you any fees from other banks' ATMs.
