looking for quickest free video encoding software

How much is your time worth? You have three GTX480's, you would be better off buying software with CUDA support.

Very hard question to answer. It depends on the quality you want. They all can be quick at the expense of quality.
If you want the fastest, then encode to Mpeg2. You can do it 4 times real time, so 1 hour is done in 15 minutes or less. The file will be large though.

I like FormatFactory. It's pretty rock-solid stable, quick, and supports most of your average formats, including various music and picture formats. Really easy to use as well.

Handbrake isn't bad either, I just found it to be a bit buggy and didn't have a whole lot of options.

wow thanks for all the responses guys. about the cuda support what would that do for me. Better picture quality or faster encoding of the video?

Video quality is just a matter of what codec, features and compression setting you choose. CUDA would speed it up....a LOT.

i use avisynth and x264.exe...

:/

maybe it'd be helpful if you told us what your source media is and what you're encoding it for?

if all you're trying to do is encode set things, (not doing video editing at all... other than maybe changing resolution or hard-subbing) then x264.exe works VERY well.

i can give you the scripts i use to do batch encoding. i asked what you're encoding for... like, if it's for an ipod touch, then i have a specific script set up for that.

Usually you have to decide file size vs quality vs speed of encoding.

The cuda encoders are not that great. While they are faster the output is lower quality than doing it via cpu most of the time.

If you are planning to do a lot of encoding there are also dedicated cards with encoders that do all the work and are designed specifically for the task.
LEADTEK WINFAST PXVC1100 is one of them
The graph above pretty much speaks for itself. Where it took more than six hours to encode a two hour 1920x1080 video using the CPU alone, the PxVC1100 was able to do it in about one hour and thirteen minutes. The card also reduced the amount of time it took to encode our 720x480 test video from 15:14 down to a about five and a half minutes.

I'm not looking to do that much lol to get a new card. Just my blueray dvd collection was destroyed and I want to backup all of the movies and be able to do it quickly. I have anydvd Hd
