I'm terrible at picking the right power supply for a machine so I'd like a couple suggestions. I'm doing an
Intel Q6600
GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB
4x1GB PC6400 RAM
Single DVD-RW
2x500GB Seagate SATA Hard Drives
Case will have like 3 Fans 2 with LEDs

What's a good power supply for this system with a little left over if I did upgrades later? I was thinking something in the 500w realm but what company and model? Please help me out! Thanks :)

Here are some solid choices under $102 :)

1) Corsair HX520 $81 AR + ship
Reviews: SPCR & JG

** The HX620 w/ 12V @ 50A is only $101 AR <--- Great for G80 SLI :light:

2) Antec EarthWatts 500 $54 AR
Reviews: SPCR & JG

3) Corsair VX450 $52 AR + ship
Reviews: SPCR & JG

4) Enhance 5150GH $67 + ship
Review: JG

Both the Corsairs and EarthWatts are built by Seasonic and have a single 12V rail. The Corsairs come with a 5 yr. warranty and better caps. The EarthWatts has a 3 yr. warranty. The Enhance is OEM and only has a 1 yr. warranty.

I have a zalman 600W SLI PSU in this rig. Replaced an aged OCZ 520 powerstream. Both of them were very nice, but the OCZ gave "better" voltage due to the adjustable rails. SVC has the zalman on sale for 118. Quiet power supply, modular cables up the wazoo, heatpipe cooling with 120mm fan. Gets the job done, but I'm sure any of the others mentioned above will also and save you some money. Always have heard the seasonic powersupplies were pretty top notch though.

Thanks for the replies. There seems to be 2 basic tiers developing here. ~$100 and ~$55. I'm a little over budget on my rig...will the $55 get the job done with some room to spare or am I pushing it. I won't do a lot of crazy stuff I just want it to work and if the $55 unit gets the job done that's fine. If I need to spend $100 and make cuts in other areas I can as well. Let me know :)

Adam it`s not a matter of getting the job done or what will do.
IMO if you were not building such a nice system maybe a PSU that costs less would be the way to go...but...

Your getting 4 gigs of 6400 ram.....why not get 2 gigs now and use the extra money to get a nice PSU? That way if the PSU goes bad on you it will not take your harddrives or your mobo or your video card with it??
A lot of people spend way too much money building nice riggs and then cheap out on the PSU!! -- edited!!

Peace and good luck!!
PS--- Look at those Corsair links that John posted above!!

Hey bud, what does cheaping out on a video card have to do with anything? Hoping you meant PSU, as cheaping out on a video card doesn't mean much since not everyone uses their computer for gaming.

The Corsair HX520, Corsair VX450 or the Enhance ENP5150-GH will all do fine for your application.

Maybe you should chill, since what you said incorrectly would still hold true to some degree but wouldnt make a bit of difference. I was politely checking with you with regards to your original statement, didn't mean for it to sound like I was jumping down your throat because you had a small typo. I guess that part is my bad then.

depends on the video card i would have to say.

Onboard Video has always been my worst choice even for a business machine. Even power point can require some GPU performance.

And video cards arent always ment for gaming. Look at the business application cards with better opengl drivers. If business didnt need video cards, then why would these be available?

Also onboard video shares ram with your main system. This i never truely liked.

But thats my 2 cents. :T

I was referring to his original statement which was a typo of course....I can spend 3000 on a system and put in a 50 dollar video card. Does that mean anything? Maybe I ran out of money...maybe I DONT NEED A 400+ dollar video card for what I do. That was my point. But of course it has been established he means not to skimp on the power supply which has a greater overall affect on the system itself than a cheap video card. You can get by with a cheap video card....a cheap PSU can potentially cause some serious damage to various parts or the entire system itself.
