i'm lost with all the options!

i'd be inclined to spend that little bit more and get a C2D, personally.. depends on how much you're willing to spend in the end..

It is up to you, apoppin... but you know any stuff worth $ right now is C2D. Before buying Pentium 4, I suggest you to know that nothing in C2D area is as slow as those two.

OK ... you talked me into C2D :p
[actually the guys in CPUs suggested a cheap "allendale"]

So ... the entire upgrade - C2D + AGP-PCIe/DDR1-2 MB will cost me $25 [$150-125 for my P4]

:D

check it over

this is final ... before submit:

Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 Allendale 1.8GHz 2M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - Retail $116

Open Box: ASRock 775Dual-VSTA LGA 775 VIA PT880 PRO ATX Intel Motherboard - OEM - $25

should work ... will i get any OC with DDR1 ?

My Core Duo 1.83GHz pwns in single threaded test (SUPER_PI) A64@2.5Ghz. C2D is even faster..that cheap mobo is good transition in right direction.

but C2D won't work with my PC 3500, will it ? :(

that means i *need* to sell my 1.5 GB PC 3500 for $100 and buy 2 x 1GB PC 5400 ...

that ASrock won't even take PC6400, will it? :p

EDIT: how about this?

it's cheap enough ... i can sell 1.5GB PC 3500 for more than i will pay for 2GB of this:

WINTEC AMPO 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

$79.99 plus $4.99 shipping

yes the C2D will work with your PC3500 DDR, but you will be only able to use 1gb of it.

the Asrock will accept PC 6400, however it will only be used as PC 5400 (667) but it will give you plenty of overclocking head room as far as memory goes...you could use the 667 setting at much higher FSB speeds and be able to tighten up the timings considerably.

OK, i did it guys ...

it's ordered .. in 2 orders ... and i had to do a "live chat" to streighten my mess out at NewEgg ... but it *should* be here by friday

ASRock - 775Dual-VSTA, open box - $25
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 [Retail - gotta have HS/F] - $116
CORSAIR XMS2 2 x 1GB DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) DC Kit - $109
-For a grand total of $250

i *should* get $125 for my P4 3.4EE and $100 for 1.5GP PC 3500 = $225 for my old HW

net costs of upgrade $25 ... it *pays* to get premium HW ... my old HW buys better new HW ... and NEXT year my new HW will be worth more than my old HW would have been ... then

priceless

you guys are the best ...

and of course i will compare my ancient rig with my more modern one

btw ... yeah .... AGP is *officially* dead ...
--apoppin has upgraded :p

now who was looking for that P4 3.4EE that OCs to 3.8G ?

--that 4x PCIe slot is equal more-or-less to an 8x AGP slot ... so it'll hold back little but HD-DVD playback ...

finally ... when i do my "real" QuadCore upgrade, i'll buy a new MB ... then probably faster RAM ... and SLi or xfire

but this planned "complete" upgrade is now longer than a year off - maybe till '09
--for $35 i can put off my upgrade quite a bit longer ... and even stick a 8800GTX in it if i feel the *need*

so - except for a LOT of my time - i am ultimately moving from P4@3.31Ghz/x850xt/1GB PC3500 to C2D 4300/x1950p/2GB DDR2 800 for about $350 ... net upgrade
--the P4/RAM upgrade was 'interim' and also contributed to the value of my current sale.

you gotta remember ... except for the x1950p ... these upgrades were dictated by "circumstances" including equipment failures. ;)

Question, if you are going to get everything new, why don't you sell the AGP card, so you'll take a $50 hit, it'll be worth it in the long run.

Get E4300 2 gig of DDR2, and DS3 and that thing will fly to 3.2ghz. Then later you are open to quad-core upgrade and at 3.2ghz it'll beat anything amd has to offer. I am sure you can scrap some $$$ for X1950XT PCIe for $170. This way you'll save $100 on a new mobo in 1 year from now.

There is no way you should be buying anything other than DDR2 ram at this point. Your other option would be to pick up an AGP board for cheap for the P4 and wait it out until the next upgrade. However, considering you can sell the parts for a reasonable amount you should do it.

I switched from P4 2.6@3.2ghz and 80gb 8mb WD drive to E6400 @ 3.4ghz and Seagate 7200.10 and my hard drive speed almost doubled, and cpu speed trippled. I am very happy.

an upgrade that i *fought*

:D

but 'of course' ... we are getting an interesting "progression" of comparisons from my upgrading ... x850xt/7800GS OC/x1950p ... P4 NW/EE/C2D ... 1GB>1.5GB DDR/>2GB DDR2

--if only i was "made" of money :p

i guess i AM made of 'credit'
:(

i *thought* of that, Russian Sensation ... but i would lose $50 more on the x1950p AGP ... and i would THEN settle no less than a 8800GTS - to really "balance" it ...

please ... look at it this way ... i *didn't* want to upgrade at all ... i am [well, 'was' till my MB lost PIC] *very satisfied* with my rig's performance

this upgrade is just "gravy" for $35 since i *have* to replace my MB
[or workaround with USB modems ... which is also about $35]
:Q

in other words ... IF i keep it the way it is - crippled - i am STUCK with onboard audio and $35 for a USB modem [that sux] - or buy *another used* S478 MB for about $40 that can fail too without warranty.

for that *same* $35 i can solidly upgrade my CPU/MB and RAM - even more + faster RAM

i would rather spend as little as possible for as much gain as possible ;)
-this looks like bang-for-buck

So whats the problem with Option 1 in your original post linked for $35? You are getting loads of performance increase.... Life is about compromise, can't have everything. But I'll tell you that having DDR2, Core 2 Duo setup is a step in the right direction :)

Consider that it'll be easier to sell those parts after as well.

i edited that OP at least 5 or 6 times ... as i kept trying to decide

i am beyond *stoked* that same $35 that would buy me a cheap USB modem as a workaround, now allows me to get great CPU /memory increases ... probably "unfettering" my x1950p/512 even further ... and i get to *keep* my Audigy2 .... instead of the onboard audio

i am NOT complaining - NOW

life IS good

i am just *surprised* and blown-away that the new CPUs are SO cheap ... my P4 EE has such a 'premium' ... and DDR2 is priced way less than DDR
[is that luck, good timing - or what?] :p

i just need to get busy, backing up now, installing my HW and OS, and then selling my older HW to recoup before the CC bill comes
--or it'll be a LOT more than $35

and of course ... my biggest fear is that dreaded "open box" MB ... supposedly it is tested ... hopefully purchased by someone that didn't know his ASrock from a hole in the ground
. . . and just got mismatched components and sent it back :D

that IS the chance you take to save $40 [and i can't find another at NewEgg ... so wish me GOOD luck please for this weekend's build]

i got her going ... :)

C2D e4300 1.8Ghz at 2.763Ghz / (bastage) ASrock MB / 2x1GB Corsair XMS PC6400
--running it at 1:1, CAS 4
[does anyone know how do force it to Cas 3?]
--it's PC6400 at PC5400 speeds [667mhz]

and i think i am near the upper limit of my MB in allowing my e4300 to OC ...
-- 'rock solid' at 307 FSB ... 2.763Ghz ... much above that it doesn't post

CPU temps are in the low 50s with TAT [they *were* hi-30s before i flashed BIOS 1.4 to 2.7 :p]
-but still reading upper30s in the BIOS at max OC

BUT 3DMark05 is *only* 10132 and '06 is 5172
---i am D/L'ing the latest Sandra ... but the earlier version was also *disappointing* in the bandwith [i think CPU to RAM was 5:4]

frankly i am disappointed ... my same rig with same x1950p/512m AGP with DDR-1/P4 EE got 9300/4300 :(

and one *damn irritating* thing with my particular MB ... there is a 75 second "delay" in going from Power up to Win startup
... looking to replace her with a Gigabyte ....
--when i can afford it [and HD 2900xt]

where ?

right here - at home - FS/T

FS: P4 3.4 EE - does 3.74Ghz

*first* of all read the stickied thread at the top of FS/T to understand what is needed to buy/sell/trade

IF you need TOP dollar, ebay is far better ;)
