Looking for new furniture

I recently moved into a new apartment and I'm in need of new furniture. I spent a some time looking at a few stores to get an idea of what I want.

I took an interest in sofas with microfiber upholstery. It seemed comfortable and smooth. Easier to sit on than leather, but more upscale than cloth. Does anybody have any experience with microfiber furniture? How does it keep up? Easily cleanable? Does it scratch or tear any easier than anything else?

update 24-May-2005

I purchased a set over the weekend from Sofa Express - sofa, loveseat, coffee table, and end table. It's a slate blue "plushsuede" (one of their brands of microfiber) material and is extremely comfortable. The plushsuede is a regular microfiber layer backed by a relatively thick padding material. Supposedly it's a newer fabric, so I'm not sure how well it wears. The complete set came to $1650 after a 20% discount for their pre-Memorial Day sale. Delivery is scheduled for June 7th.

Don't know the answers to your questions, but I ordered a microfiber plushsuede couch which will arrive in a month or so, and will be getting a big fluffy chaise of the same fabric. I work in furniture stores distribution center, so I see alot of furniture day after day, and I love the microfiber plushsuede stuff. Its just so comfortable.

When we needed a larger sofa, we ended up getting ultra suede II. Not sure if that's the same thing as micro-fibre. The same sofa in leather was $6400 so we went with the suede. So far it's been fine but we don't eat or drink anything (except beer and water) when we sit on it. We got the fabric protection and warranty just in case.

We don't have that type of furniture, but our neighbors do. It is *soo* soft. I dunno how it holds up. I personally wouldn't get it if you have small kids or destructive animals (same thing, I know.)

I like it. It's quite sturdy in my observation - it seems to be the one fabric my ginormous cat can't destroy.

It seems to me like it would just be an absolute magnet for fur. For shedding animals, I can't think of anything better than good old cowhide.

It does attract fur, but that's easily lint-brushed off. Cats' and dogs' claws will scratch the hell out of leather, and there's nothing that looks more ghetto than badly scratched-up leather furniture IMO.

I live alone, so there isn't any concern for children or pets scratching up the furniture. I'm getting an overall positive impression from most of you, so I'll probably end up with some sort of microfibre sofa.

Other opinions are always welcome.

When I went to the showroom, we were looking for something with good stain resistance, since we have kids. They took a freakin' SHARPIE and put a mark on the microfiber with it. It was easily washed off with soap and water. My kids have colored on ours with ink pens, spilled orange juice, red juices (the worst), and all have come out easily. However, I am now noticing some wear on the front edges of the cushions, where the nap is wearing out. I've had the couch for four years now.

My wife and I bought a sofa set with the microfiber 2 years ago. We're moving soon and are going to dump this set! It sucks!
Parts that were exposed to the sun faded qucikly. The cushions look like sh!t. They didn't hold their shapes well, and the fabric really accenuates that.
There's just the 2 of us now, no kids, but looking at the sofa you'd swear we had a house full of kids.

Maybe it's just the brand we bought (Bernie & Phyl's - chain in New England), but we were talking to some salesman recently in another store (Bob's) and mentioned the problems we had. They said they didn't know how it held up becuase it was too new, but from the way they were talking and acting, it seemed like they have heard similar compaints in their store as well.

Sounds like a problem with the couch (ie: not the microfiber) and putting anything in direct sunlight is not a good idea.
