Looking for multiplayer DRIVING game (restricting access to ONLY people we know!)

My son and I live in different homes (that's the stupid world today.) We would like to play a few games (driving games preferred) but I'd rather it not be some wide-open MMO where other people can talk to my son.

What games are out there where it can just be he and I playing, and no one else?

Thanks!

EDIT: He's only 10 - so no guns, excessive violence, etc. Game must be rated E for everyone... We were getting excited about Driver: San Fran until the (T)een rating for the drugs & excessive violence knocked it off the roster by his mom (and rightly so.) ;)

He's ONLY interested in driving games where he can use his G27 racing wheel.

Sonic All-Stars Transformed would be a good one. My next suggestions are not driving games, but could be fun.

I don't know if LEGO games do online multiplayer, but if they do, they'd also be perfect.

Portal 2 would also be fun.

Any other suggestions for games we can play together without total strangers barging in? Private servers? [shrug]

Thanks!

Driver: San Francisco is a lot of fun in multiplayer. The problem is there is virtually no one ever playing it, but that doesn't affect your situation. In fact, there's no multiplayer chat anyway, so your son can play with anyone (if he can find anyone) without ever being talked to. You can create a private race though if you just want it to be the two of you. It's a great game, I don't know why it's not more popular. :(

Looks like it's unpopular due to no PC demo and requires inet all the time... we should be fine though. It sure looks like fun! Thanks for a good suggestion!

$20 on Steam... hoping for a sale.

Tons of non-driving games. Basically anything thats coop. How old is he? First thing I thoguht of was Dungeon Defenders and Castle Crashers. I think both of those can be done online through steam. CC is an old school hack and slash button mash fest, dungeon defenders is 3d tower defense.

His mom's not a fan of shooters so Portal is out. Tower defence, maybe... but he's BIG on driving and loves his G27 wheel. :D

Maybe Test Drive Unlimited. That's a great game.

Are those servers still up?

What about Freelancer? I really enjoyed playing that with a couple of buddies when it came out.

I recommend Driver San Francisco (I loved it and played it for hours with my friends). It might have some swearing in though. Also I recommend Portal 2 (not a shooter, it is a puzzle game).

most games should allow you set a password so only people who know the password can join.

Portal couldn't be further from a shooter.

It's a puzzle game.

i just want to reiterate this. portal 2 is absolutely not a shooter. the only thing that gets 'shot' is the different types of goo that you aim at walls to make your character run faster, or bounce when you jump, etc. or the portal 'gun' which makes the portals you use.

There's a few racing games on Steam too, which I presume allow private multi-player. RaceRoom is one (free to play - pay for cars, tracks and skins), and Asseto Corsa is another (currently around $40) that was recently released. At least RaceRoom is similar to LFS, in that it is a pretty hard core simulation game, which requires analog inputs to be played with any kind of proficiency.

I agree its not a shooter for the most part, with that said, I decided to play this with my 3 yo son in the room, and the second I loaded up a saved game I was being shot by the little machine gun things, and "died" My son immediately was like "Woa were you just shot and killed?!?!?!"

So its not about shooting other people, but there are guns, that sound like guns, and they do kill you.

Tiger Woods 2008....there is still a good community making custom courses and a couple tours the 2 of you can play on....just set your games up through the LAN settings and it'll just be the 2 of you head to head.

lego games are local co-op i am pretty sure. :(

portal 2 is rated E. /shrug.

OP, you can maybe use http://www.esrb.org/ratings/search.jsp to help you find some games? you can filter out the things you dont want them to see in the game.

Terraria. It has guns, but you don't have to use them.

It goes on sale for $2.50 often.
