So I might be in the market for a new monitor as my Dell 2407WFP is getting really messed up. I was reading about some of the new LED monitors that are coming out like the Samsung P2370L and wondering if you guys had any info on them or knew of any other LED monitors. I was a bit disappointed that the Samsung is only 23" (was hoping for something that isn't SMALLER than my current monitor; maybe 27" or so.) I'm also a bit worried that it's a TN as I've gotten used to my VA (will it bug me?.)

well, first you should go read up on OLED technology, orgnaic light emitting diode that is, not LED backlit LCD (light emiting diode backlit liquid crystal display).
Then you should realize how fast it is coming and how short lived your new monitor will be before it can be replaced by a vastly superior OLED tech, which fixes every single complaint ever made against LCD by CRT fans, and then has some more unthought of awesomeness.

Anyways, if the monitor is small and expensive, then maybe you should hold off on buying it.

Well, the problem is I don't know how much longer I can use this monitor for. I could probably hold out a few months, a year tops I'm guessing. From what I hear, OLED won't be anything near mainstream by then...

Oh, and the Samsung is 23" with an MSRP of $399.

From what I understand LEDs offer some advantages over CCFL backlights, but they won't negate the strengths and weaknesses of a particular panel technology. TN will still have 6-bit color (8-bit dithered) and inferior (possibly lousy) viewing angles and color shift, regardless of the backlight technology. I use several PVA monitors (19" and 24") and definitely like them better than TN, though the TN I use is older and inferior to what you can get new today. The poor vertical/horizontal viewing angles are the TN deal breaker for me.

FWIW, whenever I get a few extra bucks I think that I'll be looking to pick up the H-IPS HP LP2475w for home use. It sounds like it is far from perfect, but is a good compromise for price and performance.

As for OLED, the technology sounds great, but everything I've read indicates that OLED is still years away from being mainstream, affordable products. Is there any public information that states otherwise?

Probably not any time soon, unfortunately.

According to Jon Stokes at ArsTechnica, the global financial turmoil (recession) may push back the arrival of consumer OLED products because of 1) the reduced consumer demand for new, high-end display technology and 2) the reduced availability of financing to potential OLED manufacturers who will need to build new fabs to make large OLED panels. On the bright side, you may see 14.1" OLED displays in highend laptops before too long.
