I'm getting my major in Geography, specializing in Urban/Population dynamics and GIS, and I'm looking for a good minor to compliment my major. Right now I'm leaning computer science, but I'm up for suggestion. Any GIS geeks out there?

I don't know if any minor that will tell your major "Gee, you're a nice major." :) :p

Stats? "Urban/Population dynamics" sounds like simulations, correlations and maybe a bit of the old probability but I'm a computer nerd so that's guessing.

This I have been told before. Honestly, I don't even know for sure what Python's role is seeing as how new I am to ArcGIS.

I'd have to say Computer Science. Scripting and stuff is always useful. If nothing else it might help with algorithm development that you can pass along to programmers.

And am I the only one that saw GIS and pronounced it in my head "Jizz"? Really makes the Subject/Topic sound Pedo...

People, you do not get a minor in CSC just so you can write scripts. That can be easily learned. What he needs is the math to back up the coding side of GIS.

<--- used to run a GIS team and my major was CSC

Depends on what you want to do in the GIS field?

If you want to be a map maker, analysis, data maintenance then some kind of math.
If you want to develop programs, implement data warehouses and GIS support then get an IS minor.

pssssttt......The money is in the IT side of GIS;)

A computer sciences minor of some sort would be a good idea. If you want to work in GIS other folks in your future office will expect you to be an all around geek. Try to work some natural or physical science courses into your education so you can better understand what it is that folks are trying to accomplish with the GIS systems you'll build.

Ya, I thought about going straight back to school for GIS and it looks like most places want to hire people with some programming knowledge. Computer science would help a lot there.

Otherwise, you could think about a minor that complements a specific GIS application like environmental science/whatever, urban planning, population stuff, etc.
