😕 I haven't been keeping up with hardware news lately, can anyone point me in the right direction?

thanks

on newegg power search i have checked LGA1156, USB 3, SATA 6gb/s, gigabit ethernet, and micro atx formfactor.

Looks like the problem you're running into is the SATA 6Gb/s. Seems that Newegg doesn't have any MicroATX Socket 1156 boards with SATA 6b/s. The only USB 3.0 boards seem to be based on the H55 and H57 as well.

You may have better luck looking into an AMD setup. The MSI 890GXM-G65 has everything that you're looking for. If you slap a 1090T in there, you would have a pretty potent little system.

yeah i realized, with the above options, i can't find a micro-ATX board.

how are the AMD CPUs that compete with the i5 and i7s? do they do multimedia and games equally well?

If by "multimedia," you mean media playback, then pretty much any CPU you can buy these days will be fine. If you're talking about media encoding, then the Phenom II X6's are competitive with the i7's because even though they are slower per core, they have 50% more cores. For games, they are fast enough so that you will be GPU-limited just like with the higher-end Intel chips.

yeah thats what i meant. i'm gonna be doing lots of rendering and music production on it

The 1090T just eats up super-parallel tasks like rendering because it has 6 cores vs. 4 on an i5 or i7. Add that to the fact that you can actually get the features you want with an AM3 mobo, and it's a no brainer in my opinion.

AMD seem to be pretty competitive at about equal cost in the somewhat lower end (e.g. sub $300 CPUs) assuming you don't plan to overclock.
In games it might give you lower minimums, but most of the time it's going to perform well enough (depending on your graphics card) to not have a meaningful impact vs Core i7/i5.

How soon are you buying and building? Asus has announced the ROG Rampage III Gene which replaces the Rampage II Gene. It adds SATA 6Gbps and USB 3 to the normal gigabit ethernet, 6 DIMMs, 7.1 audio, Xfire/SLI, Firewire, overclocking, 8 SATA ports, 6-core support... what more would you want? I don't think it is missing anything for it to be modern and high end.

i'm looking to upgrade in september. is that board a micro-atx one? 😱

Yes, the Asus ROG (Republic of Gamers, Asus' high end line) Rampage II Gene and Rampage III Gene are micro ATX motherboards. September? My guess is that it will be available by then. So, you can have your USB 3, SATA 6G, hex core extreme edition with 24GB RAM and two GTX 480 or two Radeon 5970... all in micro ATX.

Really, you can do all that today, except for the USB 3 and SATA 6G.

😎 will keep my eye on it 😎

I fully expect a build report from you by the end of September showcasing your awesome new small rig. :awe:

How much do you bet that motherboard retails for $250... sigh

Considering it is high end and the motherboard it replaces normally sold for $250... very likely. If you want a cheaper board, get the MSI X58M or the DFI board for around $160. However, the $160 board isn't a ROG and (for the future board) will not have USB 3 and SATA 6G.

hands down the best deal out there is the 875 at mc. it will also outperform anything from amd. i would get ram now, its going to increase a lot in price by sept and will stay high for the near future

Really? Is this based on the trends of increased computer buying before school restarts in the fall?
