Basically I'm looking to do some community development, Habitat for Humanity, Community Service, and all that great stuff in another part of the country for a year. Clearly this means relocating to someplace which is in need of these services, which is correlated generally to not so nice areas.
I was looking at a few programs in and around SF including in Oakland, Richmond, Sil-Valley etc... and also in Southern California mostly because I've never spent any time in California or on the Pacific Coast. What I don't want is to be running cummunity service in Malibu beach doing charity work to "clean up" Beverly Hills etc.., so I figure any place that is deserving of my labor is going to be a crummy area to live in, but oh well.

Any good reasons to head to one of these areas, or reasons why not too? (Housing is usually provided with these programs, although nothing fancy)

Yes, this is a repost, but only good ole Amol replied last time :(

Not really... I'm trying to find a place where I can enjoy work and be geographically in a good spot while not wasting my time hugging trees in a wealthy neighborhood.

I think you can rule out pretty much all of the Bay Area then, there are some bad spots like parts of Oakland and East Palo Alto but, they are small and surrounded by wealthy areas which would make finding reasonable housing impossible.

Or the housing is in the reallt crappy area. How bad is it? I'm not uncomfortable being in poor areas or those with minorities, it's just the threat of getting my ass/housing robbed blind that bothers me.

I've found 3 Habitat programs that seem to fit my needs, skills, and timeframe of availibility.
which, in your opinion, would be the best combo of helpfulness to community and ease of assimilation by an english speaking only east coaster with no car:
Habitat SF, Longbeach, or Redwood.

East LA, Compton, Watts, South Central, Rosemead, El Monte, West Covina, Ventura, Riverside, and San Marino all need your assistance!

Plus, prepare to bend over for the $1000 a month rent.

no car in la? you are insane. you will never be able to get anywhere.

How is the public transport in LA and or the SF areas? Since I'd basically be working on home sites and such I don't see the need to buy myself a car. Of course I'm a california n00b so correct me if I'm off base.

SF = you'll be using BART + lots of walking. I don't live in SF though.
LA = Using pretty horrible MTA buses filled with bums and the like. You need a car in LA.

SF transportation is only better then LAs because SF is in a very compact area. LA is spread out over hours and hours of traffic. and thats just the thing, you dont think of LA in miles. you think of it as "how many hours of traffic is it gonna take to get from pasadena to long beach".

no matter where you need to go its gonna take 1+ hour commute on the bus in LA... blah blah blah

in short, you will not survive without a car.

i recommend a motorcycle, cuts thru traffic, good on gas, takes up little space and most important, gets you around town.
