I got this notification from one of my profs (also program chair)

Final Schedule
Friday May 7 at 5:30 : Pedi
Sat May 8 at 11:30 Med surg 2042
MOn May 10 8:30 Patho and at 2:30 is Health ASSessment
Students who have requested for religious reasons or other excused reasons to reshedule the 2042 med surg final are asked to take the final on Wed May 5 at 2:30. This will be in rm 212 in Kennedy. Plan accordingly. Please email me with problems and to confirm you have received this email! I will get back to you next week. thanks-

Are you saying that they should have just said that any excused reasons will be rescheduled and not singled out religious reasons?

Whoever wrote it obviously doesn't fully approve of getting out of stuff for religious reasons, and was trying to take a cut at it.

Being irreligous, I don't find it offensive.

Not at all. I'd bet that students have already approached him and voiced concerns that their religion would prohibit taking the test on that day - he's merely adjusted the schedule for them. btw, did the prof have those typos? Or, are they from you? (i.e. did you cut and paste an email?)

Nope, although from the sounds of it, I wouldn't claim any religious reasons and just take the final 3 days later the regularly schedule time. It'd give me more time to prepare.

Probably a few students asked for a reschedule for religious reasons, so the professor made a new test for people who want off for religious reasons. Why would it be offensive to do what the students asked?

I'm not sure, but I think the prof is out to get a jewish classmate who has already missed classes, and needed to reschedule the last round of exams due to the last jewish holiday (whatever that was). It really annoys me in part because for all the talk of "cultural sensitivity" nursing professors throw to the wind - precious little is being shown now.

How does that show a lack of cultural sensitivity? The only thing about it that I can even conceivably construe as offensive is that he is making those with religious or other conflicts take the test sooner, but it seems to me this is a reasonable accomodation on his part. Are you offended by the word religious being used at all?

Unfortunately, this is an accelerated nursing program (BSN is 16 months). That e-mail probably represents 1 or 2 people flunking the exam and thereby being booted out of the program

It sounds like you are reading this email from a biased perspective...a perspective where you already feel like the professor does not appreciate some of this students religious beliefs.

Just reading this ourselves...with no understanding of your perspective...the email reads very normally and I would think it would offend very few.

As a matter of fact, I think you are being way too sensitive if this offends you.

They still have 12 days to study for that one exam. If a student will flunk with 12 days preparation, but pass with 15 days, then he/she isn't a very good students to begn with. They should have been studying all along and not needed 15 full days to be able to pass a test. Or is there more to this story that we don't know?

Also notice: if those one or two students have a problem with taking it on Wed, then the professor ASKED to be contacted to fix the problem. How can they still be bothered by the professor doing all of this for them?
