I have not been able to keep win2k on a single 30Gb maxtor set up on the ATA100 channel.
I have reloaded 4 times but it only stays stable for a few days then I get errors and eventualy it can't open the hive. I have set the mode down to 0 with the same results. Do I need to go to the standard IDE channels and slow down my win98 boot?

Try using the onboard controller. It could also be your flaky KT7-RAID.

The HiPoint controllers are known to have problems, not a surprise.

Argh! Do the maxtors have a problem with raid configuration or with the highpoint drivers?
I guess what I need to find out is if it is a maxtor thing, a highpoint glitch or a win2k disfunction. I can go out and get a WD 30Gb in the morning but I may still not get my win2k to behave if the HAL won't get along with the KT7's raid controller even at mode0

Thanks for whatever info can be given....

First of all Maxtors dont RAID that well, second HiPoint is crap, third Win2K and Hipoint doesnt play nice together. Thats enough for me to stay away from that Abit board.

As far as I heard Maxtors only have problems with HiPoint, I heard they RAID just fine with Promise FasTrack, second HiPoint's Win2K drivers are some of the stinkiest sh*ts ever made. People have been crying outloud for newer Win2K drivers but they simply ignored their customers.

(let me brush off the dust here) Ouch.. Well lets see, I think I made a good choice on the mouse I got :D

Guess I will start by going back to the onboard IDE and try w2k again then get the other maxtor 30 I need (or find a buyer for my 1 maxtor so I can go to WD) and start checking on promise raid cards....

Thanks

Hey LXi, I have gone back to the onboard IDE's and reloaded 2000, reformatting it with NTFS as I want for that partition and all went well till the first reboot. It failed so fast I could not see what the blue screen was saying!!! I just automaticaly restarts!
The strange thing is that if I reformat in FAT32 it works fine.
AAARRGGGGHHHH

No.. My best guess is that I have more than one issue. and I can't keep the HAL happy with the combo of things I've done, like not sticking with one DMA mode and slapping SP1 on right after 2000 was loaded. I will ripping and reloading till either I get it right or till I get buy Sam's club to get that WD drive, then I will start with a fresh FDISK.
It must have something to do with the more secure kernal and NTFS not liking something I've done.
I will yell it when I find it!
Thanks again

I got 2 Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 40 20gig 7200rpm hard drives(whew) configured in a RAID 0(stripe) formation on my KT7-RAID. I have no problems-HD TACH shows great performance. Before I had my KT7-RAID I had them on a KA7-100 and then on a Promise controller on a K7M. Ive seen others complain about the Maxtor/RAID problem(especially with the highpoint controller), but Ive never encountered it.

dennilfloss:

I dont recall the KT7-RAID having the 686B southbridge. But yes the 4.26s and the one provided by Soltek solves the problem.

tboo, are you running win2k with NTSF on that system? I can get win98 or 2000 in fat32 to run fine. It's the win2000 with NTFS that is giving me fits... even off the standard IDE channels.

dennilfloss, thanks for the input. Should'nt I be able to run w2k (in NTFS)on the IDE "0" at mode 0 up to 3 or 4 without an upgrade of anykind?

Riccola-1st I was running 98se and now am running WinME. Maybe it does have something to do with Win 2K-dunno
