looking for heatsink - have a Coolermaster Ammo case

My stock Intel heatsink isn't doing well, just checked speedfan and it's showing 52c for both cores and my PC basically just has Firefox open. I dunno how accurate this is, but better cooler can never hurt.

My case is 250mm deep according to the specs. I see a lot of reviews for heatsinks like the V8 and the Noctua where the comments are that they barely fit in peoples full size case. My Ammo is a mid sized, with no fan on the side panel. I don't own a ruler, so I'm looking for the actual depth of my case that's useable with the side panel on. I'm also open to suggestions for a heatsink. I'm not trying to OC too much, have a C2D 6550 in a HOT room. No AC and So Cal so in the summer it gets pretty sickly hot in here. I'm not going to keep the case forever, I plan to get a new one maybe around the end of summer. But I should be able to find a heatsink that will fit this one I can xfer over.

I am looking at the V8 and the Noctua (model with 1 120mm fan) I don't exactly want to spend 60-70 bucks though. If a suggestion for something around $40 I would jump on it 🙂

thanks.

good suggestions Blain & Rallymaster I appreciate them. The Xigmatek Dark Knight looks damn nice and a few reviews say it comes with good thermal grease. Free shipping is always nice

the ZALMAN CNPS9500 looks nice, pretty cheap would be about the same price since it has no free shipping. Damn I wish Newegg let you see which wearhouse they were in. I'm order Monday get Tuesday close to the CA one. I can't decide between these 2 and whichever I could get by Tuesday would be my pick. Unless both were in the CA location lol. That Xigmatek looks pretty sweet though. If it will fit in my case with the side on maybe I'll just go 'head and order it.

*EDIT* Just downloaded and ran Real Temp and it was saying my temps were 52 min and 65 max. I ran Prime95 and withing a minute the max shot up to 73 and looked like it would have still kept going. It's pretty cool tonight so I figured if I'm basically close to 60 when doing nothing and 72 when prim95ing and it's not even hot outside I need to jump on a cooler asap . So I ordered the Xigmatek Dark Knight just now. $43 shipped and it comes with some sort of thermal compound. Don't expect it to work magic for that price but it should make a big difference. Pretty inexpensive and one of the best looking heatsinks I came across on Newegg so a win/win.

will report back with a temp update when I get it installed.

Gotta love Newegg, ordered the heatsink Sunday night and the UPS guy delivered it today, pretty damn big and very nice looking with the black mirror looking paint. having to pull my MB out to put on the backplate gave me a good reason to try and tidy up my wiring job. I have had 3 other tower coolers with the fins on them and the fins on the others would bend real easy. These don't move at all, I'm impressed at the quality for $40. I know it won't cool as well as a Noctua or a Coolermaster V8, but this was a good deal. Any thoughts on which side I should mount the fan, I'm in the process of re-wiring my case and have yet to actually put the heatsink in. My logics tell me to mount it so it blows air out the back of my case, but I'm not too sure.

always follow your logics.

Real Temp is reporting 28 / 30 for my temps. Last night around this time it was about the same temp outside and it was reporting 58 / 60. Seems like one hellova difference. looks real nice with the white LED's too, and is silent, or at least not as loud as my 120 mm case fans. Been running Prime95 with the heat stress for about 15 minutes and 45c is the max. Last night I hitting 100c. I don't know how accurate this program is, but it's less than 1/2 last nights readings so even if off, it's still way lower. Best $40 I've spend on a PC ever

The stock hsf intel gives on 45nm processors literally made me shit a brick when I opened the box for my q9550. Fire hazard waiting to happen. I woulda used the brick of shit I laid instead but luckily I had a TRUE lined up for the task.
