Looking for hard drive diagnostic utility...?

My friend's hard drive crashed unexpectedly; now I'm a little paranoid and am looking for a utility that will warn me in advance of hard drive failure. I did a search and someone mentioned something called S.M.A.R.T. - is this freeware? If not, is there any sort of downloadable utility that I can get to predict hard drive failure?
 
SMART is built into the drive logic. Make sure the option is enabled in the BIOS, and you will be warned before a drive failure.
