Looking for good racing game

Like the title says. I'm interested in a fun game, not necessarily the absolutely most realistic simulator (GTR2 sounds way too complex/detailed to be fun). GRID sounds like it could work but I like being able to make some modifications to the cars (bolt on mods, not necessarily fine-tuning the exact camber angles in my new suspension, etc).

I've looked around and seen Race 07 and the new GTR Evolution which look pretty cool, can anyone comment on those? Does GTR E stand alone or do you have to have Race07 already? I've also seen references to Test Drive being pretty good.

GTR Evolution is an expansion to Race '07. Since the release of GTR: Evo, you can buy Race '07/GTR: Evo together for $29.99 on Steam: See here.

You can't go wrong with rFactor, GTR2 or Race '07/GTR: Evo. There are mods constantly added to all three (new cars and tracks.) rFactor is the simulator with the largest amount of add-ons, followed by GTR2. Have a look here for a taste of what the rFactor modding community has to offer: Text

Test Drive: Unlimited has some upgrade options in it but it's done in stages with no individual options. It's pretty much about buying new cars and houses around Hawaii. With car delivery missions, street races, etc.

If bolt-on mods are really what you're after then anything from the Need For Speed Series is what you want. Have a look at the new NFS coming soon, NFS: Undercover.

From my personal experience playing the games I listed in the first two paragraphs, you really can't go wrong with those. There are assists in those games that will allow you to get out on the track and get use to how the car feels. Once you get the hang of them you can start turning the assists off and start tweaking the car settings. It's really not as bad as you would think it to be. They also offer online play if that's something you enjoy doing.

You can click on "Sim racing videos" in my sig. I have some videos from rFactor, Race '07, Grid, Need For Speed: Pro Street, Dirt and GTR2.

TDU is pretty good. Some of the NFS Underground games are somewhat ok.

Hmmm, I didn't really find Porsche Unleashed very fun--at least not compared to NFS3. Anyway, I've played GTR2 and it is fun if you want something absolutely realistic. I've played the GRID demo as well and enjoyed it. To be honest, I'm still waiting for the Gran Turismo/Forza Motorsport racing game for the PC.

Thanks for the responses, guys.

I'll check out that Race07 demo this weekend, that might be what I'm looking for. The reviews I've read on GTR2 make it sound too realistic/detailed to have much fun with (I like realistic physics and all, but I'm looking for something fun to just pick up and play not necessarily to get my ASE certification).

Is Gran Turismo going to be released for the PC? Cause the last really fun racing game I got into was GT on the original PS1, spent waaay too much time unlocking tracks & building supercars. Of course, that was like 10 years ago, games have obviously improved since then but that feel is what I'm looking for again (without having to buy a PS3).

I'm sort of in the same boat. I loved Gran Turismo for the PS1 and PS2, especially because it was realistic, but also gave an incentive to keep playing because you had to earn money to get better cars and licenses. There were a ton of cars, and you started with some pretty measly cars, not some Aston Martin like other games.

I bought Grid for PC and it is pretty damn good. It's realistic, but with the Driver assists on it is playable until you get used to it. The thing I don't like is that there isn't nearly as many cars as in Gran Turismo and money is never an issue because you make so much of it per race. Still, it is really good.

I played the demo for Race 07, but found it almost too realistic. Also, it seems like one of those games where you start with everything unlocked, and you just play, with no incentive to progress...

Too bad Gran Turismo 5 isn't available for PC.

The last Need For Speed I played was NFS: Hot Pursuit, which was a whiiile ago. It was really arcade-y and that's not really what I like. How are the newer titles?

Ijji Games has this fun little online MMO type of racing game called Drift City. It's not very complex at all, but there are missions to accomplish which provide upgraded parts and money. With more money comes the opportunity to purchase better vehicles. What I really liked about it is there isn't really one BEST car, it was all based on your driving abilities. Some cars were better for tight turns, some for long straight away speeds, etc...

Best of all, the game is free!

Project Torque. Free from Aeria games. It's a micropayment type of game, you don't have to spend money to play it unless you want the best of the best upgrades.
