I have an Athlon 800 system. My Maxtech (now out of business) 56k internal modem connects great under WinME, and Win98SE. The problem is that Win2k see's the modem, but has no drivers for it. I have searched high and low looking for an optional driver for it. It is an HFS Winmodem. Maxtech model XPVS56P/RS. If anyone has any drivers they KNOW will work for this modem under win2k, I'd love to get a link. If not, tell me about a good modem that will work. DSL and Cable is NOT available in my area.

Thanks

If you have a buck to spend, get a Winmodem based on the Lucent Technologies chipset. I'm sure Win2K will have drivers for it already, and if not, you won't have to look hard for some.

I use a USR myself... Has worked in every OS so far, most of the time not needing me to get a driver.

I've got a Conextant-based Best Data 56k Winmodem. Works like a charm and I only paid $5 for it from OfficeMax

Lucent, Conexant or the 3COM modems. All these brands/types in the Winmodem flavor works fine in Win2k. I was using a 3COM PCI Winmodem before getting on cable a long time ago.

I've used all these modems in Win2k and always connect at 48000bps all the time. But that depends on line condition though.

Thanks to all. My Maxtech is a Conexant modem, but when I install the modem in Win2k, the modem is detected, and I've actually downloaded a couple of different drivers for Conexant modems. I've even tried to use one that comes with win2k. Same thing both ways. Win2k tells me that this driver is not for the device I'm using and it is not supported. Oh well, It's only money right? I guess I'll go get me a newer Winmodem. I'll give the ones you guys gave me some research on pricewatch tonight. Thanks

Plain and simple Lucent Winmodems SUCK! I got a average 2.9KB/sec out of mine, yet my USR gives me a average 4.5KB/sec.... BIG difference.

dulanic: Plain and simple it dosent work well for you. In most cases it will be better than that 3com modem for most people. What drivers do you use?

NFS4,
I just tried the driver you gave me a link to. It wouldn't work either. Win2k informed me that this was not the correct driver for this device. I did notice that the drivers had "NT" in them. Now I'm not sure, but is this correct? Should they still refer to NT?

Thanks
