Looking for FREE mp3 to midi converter.

Is there such thing as a safe mp3 to midi converter program I can download so I can make some ringtones for my older cell phone? It supports mp3 rings, but I like the midi sounding ring tone as they are very distinguishable over just an mp3 song.

I don't think mp3 to midi has ever really worked b/c the computer has a hard time distinguishing the different instruments of the song. If you like the midi sound, why not just search for preexisting midi versions of the songs you're looking for? Alernatively, you could convert those midi's into mp3, which is simple

I've played with a few mp3-to-midi converters (ie. 7Canaries Standard). It was very interesting to see what notes/sounds it converted correctly...

If you can get each instrument/channel as separate mp3s, then mix the midi outputs together, I'm sure it would give even more accurate results though.

It is quite hopeless to convert an entire song to midi at once. I have done it with individual tracks in Cubase, and it sorta works with simple harmonies, like a bass, though you have to go through the extraction afterwards.
