Looking for free CPU cooling software... Know where to find it?

Hi All, and thanks for the replys... No, I'm not talking about temperature monitors... I'm talking about software that idles the CPU and other various stuff to bring cpu temps down: like cpuIdle, rain, vCool, etc... I used to use vCool but for some reason the version I have doesn't work in Win2000?... And when I tried to get a newer version their site was gone.

In fact the only software cooler I could find that still had a site was cpuIdle and they wanted $30.00 for it; which is a little out of my budget for now.

Anyone have any ideas, or info?

They're obsolete. All the software coolers did was issue the Halt instruction when idle, but every modern OS does that now.

Exactly, and most cpus now from the days of the first p4 (donno about p3 etc) those prorgrams will do absolutely nothing. I think all these progs came to be popular in the days of athlons and athlon xp, which dont halt and they always run at nearly max temp, so those progs improoved temps considerably.

Hi All, and thanks for trying to help me,

Obsolete for you, but not for me... I'm still running a Abit KT-7a and a Athlon 1200Mhz.

Anyways, I got my vCool to work sort of, it crashes on me every once in a while but found a newer version to try so maybe that'll do the trick.

Here's some instructions:

Un-Zip files to a folder of your choice... If you're running NT/W2K/XP you need to install the driver using the loaddriver executable: Copy vcool.sys to your system32 folder and run loaddriver.exe, enter the path to vcool.sys and press "Install" and "Start"... Then put vcool.exe in the file of your choice and click on it to activate: you'll see it in your bottom right system tray... Left Mouse click on it for options.

The software is obsolete because WINDOWS now sends the hlt commands, so you dont need a third-party application.

Hi Furen,

I don't think it's obosolete when it comes to the old Athlons... Without this software my cpu runs about 10 to 15 degrees hotter no matter what it's doing... I don't think the Athlons receive the halt command without some added help... AMD even made a prog that does the halt thing... If I can find a link I'll post it.
