Looking for first gfx card

I have been meaning to get into the computer gaming world for a while now but couldn't justify spending the money (college is kind of expensive but now I'm finally done ). I am looking for a somewhat beginners card, not to low end but not high end (midrange). Some games I am interested in playing a Command and Conquer, Half-Life 2, just to name a few and give you guys an idea of my needs. It would be great if you guys could help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.

The things you will have to consider are:

1) what are the specs if the rest of your system?
2) what resolution you want to play at?
3) do you want max settings, or are you willing to compromise?
4) what games, now and in the future?
5) budget (it always comes down to this)

i have the same situation so i also posted similar questions on the forum. my system is kind of behind the technology cuz i am still running p4 ht 3.0 with 2 hds and 2 burners. the original graphic card is x600 and psu is merely 300w or so. i am struggling with the options " 7600gt or 7900gs". i dot expect go get perfect image quality so max setting is not much important to me. i want to save my money as more as i can. after taking a look at newegg, 7600gt at $90 and 7900gs at $ 120 are appealing to me. so i feel confused which one is more worthwhile.

7900GS is really a great value and can be had for 90 bucks at outpost right now, usually fluctuating between 120-90 dollars with rebate. You can spend a little more to get a ATI 1950 but the cost/value ratio is very close.
