intervideo windvd6 not free but kicks ass, love the video desktop feature

I appreaciate your opinion, however, what do the words "Must Be Free" mean to you?

You do realize that licensing costs money, right?

Any "Free" DVD decrypting program is either in violation of the DMCA or a gift from a generous company.

Didn't work... Wouldn't recognize dvd.

it should work, i use vlc to play dvds on my comp.

Tried playing Lotr:Fellowship, installed program, asked it too look at dvd drive, it recognized no files... I'm gonna reinstall it and check....

are you using the "open file" option or "open disc"?

cause you need to use "open disc"

Reinstalled vlc, sort of worked, but when it started playing after the menu, it just showed a dark blue patch. Also, picture on menu was absolutely terrible.

I have no qualms about decoding DVD's that I purchased legally with software that violates the DMCA.

Neither do I. 🙂

That is the reason, unfortunately, that DVD codecs are not free.

The nice thing is you can get the codecs from practically any app that provides them and then use any player you want.

For example, I use an NVIDIA product called nSTANT Media that I picked up along the line with some DVDRW drive I got.

Simple little install, no visible installation info but then I can use WMP or whatever I want to play DVDs.

Picked it up at a Microsoft event along with the hardware bundle.

Apparently it does more than just that, but I have no clue what.
