So I'm moving to Ithaca NY and would like to be able to walk to/from work year round. I've got a pair of nice red wings, but they are just leather and (from my own experience) don't provide enough warmth in the cold.

I found these: http://www.patriotsurplus.com/...5ST-Cold-p5439690.html

I'm looking for opinions on this pair, or suggestions on other manufacturers I should be looking at.

( I was also planning on getting a pair of flannel lined jeans, probably from Carhartt. As for winter coats ... is Northface really the best or are there lesser known manufacturers that are just as good without the price tag. I know Carhartt sells some heavy coats but I haven't heard anything about them)

Actually, not for this (grad student at Cornell), but for the last three jobs I've had, yeah. I'm pretty used to them by now. Hell, I wear my big red wings more often than my tennis shoes.

Get a puffy down jacket. Those things look ridiculous but they're so warm

Also for pants, I would get some snowpants that can zip over your normal pants. Otherwise it'll be really hot once you get inside a building

that's why you'll be in Ithaca? going to Cornell? Congrats, I have a friend there. :)
around campus you won't want big clunker steel toe boots like that. actually, it's plowed well on campus, and you could get by with low boots. surprisingly most guys still wear sneakers all winter from what i've seen.

I'm leaning more towards something like what carhartt sells because it's cheaper and in my experience it'll last forever. The downside is that I'll look like a lumberjack, but I don't really care if I save a couple hundred and get a warm coat.

just wear a red Cornell hoodie under it (hood out) and you'll look fine. :)

I was a grad student there many moons ago. I lived on Cascadilla st. down in town, and had to walk all the way up every day, 4 seasons (Phillips Hall, EE).

A wool sock and a decent hiking boot from Sierratradingpost should do you. Get a waterproof one so there's no soak-thru, or use mink oil on leather to keep water out. You don't need those expensive USAF boots IMO.

I can attest to wearing sneakers year round. I never had boots for my 4 years at RIT, just had to learn to walk in the right places. That said, I finally got myself a pair of boots after going to a Patriots game in the snow and slush. Never have my feet been so cold :( So now I have a nice pair of LL Bean boots. I'm also still rocking Columbia winter/ski coat from way back in HS. It's held up remarkably well. Nothing wrong with Carhartt, or North Face though. Although North Face does seem to have a reputation to be a bit preppy, whether that's a positive or negative is up to you

Less worried about the image than the price, with north face.

I'd definitely get some water proof boots. It can get pretty slushy on occasion, and the less popular sidewalks don't get plowed. Besides North Face, wool overcoats are quite popular as well. However, a black or dark colored Carhatt coat wouldn't stand out at all.

Carhartt bib overalls for the bottoms, and layers for the top. I work(before unemployment) outside in MD, and it's rare for me to even wear a full jacket. My typical winter wardrobe was full thermal underwear, BDU pants, Tshirt, sweatshirt, button up shirt and a vest. On the coldest days I'd add a wind resistant jacket. For footwear, get something lined with thinsulate, and wool socks. Wool socks are best year round, summer included. They have good cushion for your feet, and are very absorbent.

Sorel makes good boots for heavy snow, slush, and extreme cold.

I wore Fabiano (later changed name to Scarpa, sort of) full leather hiking boots with gobs of sno-seal throughout college, no problems with cold feet. Limmers and Whites are the only modern boot I can think of that use leather that heavy.

a good hiking type boot and wool socks will be fine. you don't want anything too warm, your feet will sweat and they will be worthless. I work 12 hour shifts outside in the high desert of Wyoming at all hours of the night and day. I wear a pair of wool socks, a pair of synthetic insulated socks and my normal wolverine steel toes in temps between -5 and -40 F about 30 to -5 i skip the wool socks, above that i just wear normal socks. this system seems to work well. for your short walks i would think just a pair of wool or synthetic insulated socks would work fine. when i started my socks were too warm and my feet would sweat, in an hour my toes would be numb and i would have the start of frost bite. frost bite sucks. you do not need to keep your feet warm, just keep them from getting cold. I went to school in the very northern reaches of Michigan and never needed anything more than my lightly insulated red wings ( non steel toe) and a pair of synthetic socks.

flanel lined jeans are awesome. I love them. the lands end ones are very nice. also, carhart coats are very good, warm. REI has some nice coats that are a bit less than the big brands too. I usually like to find the columbia outlet stores for coats and such.

I haven't the slightest clue about pants and coats, although I'm also a fan of carhartt in general. For footwear, I'd stick with something like this from Red Wing. Although you can get heavier insulation, 400g of thinsulate strikes the right balance between warmth and indoor wearablility IMO. Another good suggestion is just getting something waterproof, which will be dry and likely come with a gore-tex or proprietary equivalent liner that will add some insulation as a by-product. You could augment those with a pair of wool socks and be good to go.

I mentioned the Thinsulate, as most people get cold feet. If that doesn't bother you, go with plain leather. I always wore regular combat boots, and they were fine for me. Get hightop boots and tuck your pants in the tops. It keep snow from packing around your pants cuffs. This doesn't apply to your case, but it also keeps bugs, and mud out. Good for long xcountry treks.
