trying to help a friend looking for $1000 laptop that is as light as possible with good support. this laptop will only be used for word processing. for some reason she is concerned with support and not getting a dell. any suggestions?

For that price she wont' get great support from anybody I really know of. Havn't dealt with asus or anybody like that. If she wants great support see if IBM offers Refurbs.

I would recommend getting a dell but calling the canadian tech support. just beg them not to transfer until after troubleshooting has been done. however, i guess then you have to call the states after if any hardware needs replacing and that alone is a pain in the ass. actually if you buy one from canada there is a way for us to send out replacement parts. and we're much friendlier. 🙂

If you want light, cheap and good customer support, look at the Averatecs. 1" thick, 4 lbs.

We have 2, both run 12-14 hours a day and in 2 years only one slight problem with one (HSF) fixed in warranty free.

They answer their phones and help in 30 seconds.

Newegg has a few. Read the reviews on the cheapest one. $789 with free shipping and no tax someplaces.

Just another option for you.

You could always get a 12" iBook. Apple has great support and the base 12" ibook would be around $1000 maybe a bit less w/ an edu discount.
