I'm looking for a single player space fighter game that mostly focuses on space battles that are fun and action packed. Something like Battlefront II space maps. I don't want to spend a ton of time building spacecraft or on strategy. I'm looking for a relaxed, casual experience shooting other types of spacecraft. If we could board larger spacecraft FPS style to take them down from in the inside like battlefront II that would be a bonus.

There really aren't any new ones at this time. You would have to go back to older games such as Freelancer, Descent 3, Starlancer, or the Wing Commander series. Most of this can be found on GOG.

You could do the X series...they are kind of like a single player version of Eve Online.

Obviously there is Star Citizen coming...which you could try out if you haven't already but it is basically an MMO.

Star Fox 64 was amazing. After that, no idea.

erm. well. there's Rogue Squadron series too. But those are old. Or have the rumblings I've heard about a new one been true?

Keep an eye on "Everspace." It's in alpha right now but it sounds like it might be exactly what you're looking for.

I wouldn't recommend Star Citizen for what you described. The Arena Commander mode offers constant respawn dogfighting as an in-game simulation (which is a blast), but the main game will be MMO oriented and a large part will be non-combat. If you're looking for a casual game to jump in and do some space blasting, I don't think it's the right fit.

Don't listen to JSt0rm...he's an SC fanboy who thinks it's the only space game worth playing and recommends it for everything.

Thanks for the suggestions. Many of the games seem hard to find. Everspace looks really nice though and I'll be looking forward to its release.

Rouge squadron 3d looks great but it's very old as are the other games. I did grab the latestest star wars humble bundle. It came with a few x series games so I may give them a try after I find out if they run ok.

Not quite what you're asking for but I wonder if you'd like FTL.

There are bunch of space combat games but I haven't played the so can't suggest.

Grab one of the star wars bundles or check gog if theyre on sale. Xwing Alliance or Tie Fighter are probably your two best options. Sure theyre older, but theyre awesome.

X wing/Tie fighter as well. Since you have an XP OS you should have no trouble playing these games. Hubby loves Wing Commander Prophecy on XP.

Everspace (upcoming, already backed)
Rebel Galaxy (amazing sound track, super fun if short; major Firefly vibes)

Rebel Galaxy is good, classic space combat & trading like Wing Commander Privateer, with nice graphics.

Other 3D spacesims are just way too complex for casual fun. I couldn't get into Elite & Dangerous.

If you don't mind 2D, a few really good ones I had a lot of fun in:

Starsector: Fractalsoft, not on Steam yet. It's an excellent tactical fleet combat game, real good ship/fleet customizations.

Void Expanse: Steam, combat is very twitch (things die fast), lots of Pilot skills to upgrade to keep you busy. Solo pilot like Freelancer/Privateer.

Star Nomad 2: Steam, combat is fast but very skill-based, tactical and HARD, esp in the starter noobship. Squad RPG with some of the best merchant/trade mechanics I've played.

Keep an eye out for Space Pirates & Zombies 2, due soon.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

I installed Battlefront II and X-wing alliance last night. It's going to take some work to get x-wing working correctly since it's not the gog version.

Rebel Galaxy and DarkStar One look interesting. I added them both to my wishlist.

Just out of curiosity what is War Thunder's single player like? Can you earn other planes or does this game cost a small fortune to play?

Yo OP, There is only one game that suits your desires, and that is Wing Commander Prophecy! Yes, it is dated, however, over the years it has been fan modded in many ways, including high definition video. There is an in game simulator where you can pick a mission, ship, weapons loadout, and skill level. You REALLY NEED! a joystick to enjoy any flight sim. I have an old Micro$oft WWII flight sim that has been modded to allow me to import modern warplanes. Oh the joys of flying into 1944 Germany in an F4 Phantom :D

Please, if we're bringing that into play then we should be looking at Freespace 1 & 2, the latter of which has a fan made engine overhaul and some of the absolute best campaigns of any game. God I wish we could have Freespace 3...

please give star citizen your money.

True. It's a great project and any fan of space sims and games should support it if possible. They're doing wonderful things and the alpha keeps getting better and each release smacks the haters down one more notch to the point anybody crying that it's a scam is showing how ignorant they are.

This person is an idiot. Star Citizen is currently a buggy mess, and it isn't going to last through 2017. There are better options for less money.

If you want an advanced space sim, buy Elite: Dangerous.

1.) Name calling, come on pres baby, you know better. Also, I missed you <3

2.) I think you meant: "Don't buy Elite: Space Trucking Simulator"

3.) Star Citizen, even in its alpha state has provided much more fun than Elite: Dangerous has for me, and I played ED through its Beta through release.

4.) ...

5.) Glad you keep pushing the bar back for when Star Citizen will fail, trololol. Grasping for straws, I like your spirit pres baby.

Rebel Galaxy, if you like broadside combat and some simple yet fun and no micromanagement building components, with a mild bit of trading.

It's a nice and relatively stupid game that allows you to get your jollies from flying around, robbing people, trading elicit goods, and blowing anything up that gives you static.

it's 2D space maneuvering and combat and plays really well with a gamepad. Also has a bitching sound track and overall has a Firefly feel to it. (but the music gets old because it recycles through 3-4 tunes)

The old school Star Wars TIE Fighter is still challenging even after almost 20 years. Bonus is it runs awesome on most new computers!
