I'd like to convert my old audio Cassette tapes to CD's. Anyone have a suggestion as to a good/cheap/free software package that can input and digitize the analog cassette input to my sound card and then do basic editing and conversion to cda files (I think that's what regular CD players need)?

I do that with Cool Edit from Sintryllium. Spin Doctor in ECDC 4 also does it. Nero will not . . . can't handle analog input. What you do is convert the caseete tracks to WAVE files. You need about 7 gigs of HDD space available for a CDR.

7 gigs? I think you mean 650MB... 7 gigs would be the work of a dual-layer DVD-R.

BTW I recommend Cool Edit. You can use the Noise Reduction filter to rid yourself of the cassette hiss.

If you are talking old cassette albums, I recommend Napster. It is a hell of a lot easier downloading a ripped digital recording than sitting there at your PC recording wav's in real time of old, analog, crappy sounding tapes. My father wanted me to burn all of his old vinyl which was about 100 LP's and 500 45's. Ya right:)

bmg,
I've converted many LP's with Syntrillium's Cool Edit. Much of it was in really poor condition but cleaned up nicely with this program. You can download a trial vers. at Syntrillium's web site.

Goldwave works OK. Cool Edit 2000 is better and the pluggins for it are good. A 30 day trial version for Cool edit 2000 can be downloaded here I use Coool edit 2000 and the noise reduction filter to convert old 78's and 33's lp's to cd all the time and it does a good job but its not cheap for the registered version.

Thanks for all the tips! Since I was in a hurry yesterday I looked through all the bundled software I've gotten with sound cards and my Plextor CDRW. I usually dump this stuff in a stack and never use it. Anyway, for the short term I found a recorder program from an old SBLive purchase which got me from analog input to wav files and I used Plextor MVP2000 to write the wave files out to CDR. I'm still lacking the edit function so have downloaded Goldwave and Cool Edit 2000 to try out. Thanks again. This forum is always a great source of info.
