Ok, so i've been out of the PC gaming world for awhile thanks to my PS3. A few months ago I got a new laptop, a Dell "gaming" laptop. Not exactly state of the art graphics, but it certainly trumps my aging 9700 pro.

Anyway, I'm going on vacation tomorrow and the flight there and back will be very long. Looking for a game to keep me occupied, preferably an RPG of sorts, obviously not online since I'll be on a plane. Only stipulation is that it run on a fairly high end laptop...not desktop.

I've heard good things about Elder Scrolls IV, but I was planning on getting that for PS3. Any others?

Thanks

If you get Oblivion, I would suggest getting it for PC, as the mods are a real plus.

Or you can opt for it's predecessor, TES III: Morrowind, which is both cheaper, longer, better (imo), and has much more content out, both user created and already present in the game.

KotOR is also a great RPG

The Witcher is new and has a good following of fans

Diablo 2 is getting back in favor with the announcement of Diablo 3

Titan Quest is also a good hack-n-slash RPG that's cheap to pick up.

I would never class Diablo 2 as a true RPG since its more of a hack and hash, true RPG games to consider are Arx Fatalis or even Gothic /Gothic 2.

I thought about this one.....I'm not sure how well my laptop will handle it. I guess it would be playable, if the details aren't maxed out.

D2 is a great game obviously, but I think I wore that one out a few years ago, hahah.

Mass Effect would be great for a flight... If your battery/machine can take it.

I assume it's at least a 8600M or such?

Yea. It's a 8600M GT w/ 256MB GDDR3, Core2 Duo 2.5ghz, 2GB RAM.

Not slow for a laptop, just not a desktop. The only game I've really run on it was FEAR, which is a little old, but ran smooth.

edit: and I have the extended battery which goes about 4 hours or so under heavy use, if I don't have the screen brightness cranked all the way up.

I've heard good things about Elder Scrolls IV, but I was planning on getting that for PS3.
Get ES IV on the PC. The game's leveling system is deeply flawed in design and player made mods are the only way (that I know of) to correct it. From what I have heard, this mod is the one that fixes it.

My suggestions for RPGs:

  • Baldur's Gate II (and expansion), sizable modding community exists that provides extensive player made content
  • Baldur's Gate 1 with EasyTuTu and BG1 NPC Project mods installed
  • PlaneScape: Torment (arguably the best RPG ever made)
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1
  • Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (this game has been heavily modded by the community, look around for goodies) (RPG / FPS hybrid)
  • Arcanum of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
  • NeverWinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer
  • NeverWinter Nights 1: Shadows of Undertide Chapter 1 and Hordes of the Underdark chapters 2 and 3. (NWN1 has the largest modding community that I know of, tons of free player made single and multiplayer games (some even free pseudoMMORPGs) can be found at the NWNVault.
  • Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines (RPG / FPS hybrid)
  • Deus Ex 1 (RPG / FPS hybrid)

If you are interested in a huge pack of good RPGs, checkout The Forgotten Realms bundle
and if you want some Blizzard titles, checkout some of their bundles.

If you want the latest drivers for your laptop, but your laptop maker does not have the latest on their website, checkout LaptopVideo2Go.

Whatever you do, make sure you have all your driver issues sorted out before you go. Don't want to be debugging while on a plane far from your internet connection. ;)

Schadenfroh, you tried MEPC yet?

It, like some other games, could ruin your vacation by making you sit there playing it the whole time. :p

Unfortunately no, my x1950 Pro and Athlon64 4000+ are scared of it.

I did pickup BioShock on sale for ~$14, but I am waiting to upgrade before playing it. After I finish up Arcanum, going to play through the Fallout series (have not played it yet, but recently acquired the Fallout Collection bundle) and possibly the Icewind Dale series (it came with the forgotten realms bundle that I bought and I am waiting for them to finish up the IWD I NPC Project).

Hopefully by that time AMD's Socket AM3 or Intel's Nahelm will be out along with video cards that have DisplayPorts on them. Probably will not upgrade until after Christmas, once this semester starts I have 18 hours of pure Computer Science and Mathematics senior / junior level classes. 2/3 of my CS / Math classes this summer were canceled, so the fall picks up the slack.

BTW, anyone with NWN1 (and the expansions) should try the following free user made modules (player made games for NWN):
Tales of Arterra series (best NWN1 module that I have played so far, I liked it better than the official game):

Hex Coda 01 (good old steampunk lovin):

Get Oblivion for PC (not PS3) and ONLY if you are willing to use mods. Otherwise it's a big waste of time IMO.

I'd actually recommend Morrowind over Oblivion, even with mods. Morrowind is overall just a better game.

KOTOR I - II, Vampire: Bloodlines, Neverwinter Nights 1 or 2

For all of them be sure to patch up before you leave. Vampire: Bloodlines is on steam, you probably need to install and authorize it while you have a connection.

I really don't think you should be afraid of Bioshock. It ran flawlessly on my system at max details at 1280x1024, and mine isn't much better than yours. It isn't exactly a graphical masterpiece, it is just ok when it comes to graphics (not a WOW game like Call of Juarez or Crysis) but it is fun to play and the graphics are are still pretty good.

As for the OP, I would also suggest NWN1 or 2, but also Stalker. I have been playing Hellgat London lately but I can't really recomend it. It just isn't that good of a game. The best RPG I have played on the PC is Oblivion (or Oblivicrack as my roommate called it, since I played it for at least 200-300 hours), but I never did play Morrowind. If you live in South Eastern Michigan, I actually have an extra copy of NWN Gold because I lost it during a move and bought NWN Platinum to replace it, and I later found the original game I bought.

Honestly all the above suggestions are perfect. The only thing I would be worried about is your battery being able to last. I know my laptop battery doesn't last much more than an hour and a half or so when I'm gaming.
