Looking for an operating system

Hi, I am building my own computer. It runs on an AMD 64 3500+. I know very little about running systems. I've heard from some people that Linux is better for security. I also heard it is difficult to use, and taking a course on it is recomended. Would it be hard to learn how to use it? Also, what about Windows Xp Home or Pro? I guess pro is better, but is it really worth extra money? I just need some advice on what to get, THANKS

Tell us more about what you want to be able to do with the system? (e.g. just browse and email, play popular games, build your own kernel, etc 🙂) That will help other posters give you real advice on what might be best.
 
Well, I play lots of games. I would be playing Doom3, mabye H2, and others. Lots of online games also. I use gmail regularly as well as AIM a lot. I also might do some video editting, but not a ton. so don't base it just on that. I do some browsing I guess. I like to go on forums. I guess that about it though. Hope it helps!

windows xp flavor!

Don't get linux if you wanna play alot of games. One thing linux lags in is the gaming part!
 
You can get a one year evaluation of 64But Windows from MS for free. You can install that and Linux in a dual-boot (very easy to do) and figure out if you want to stick with one or the other or both.
