I had the same trouble about 3 weeks ago. Finally loaded windvd on the laptop and it worked. I couldn't find it any other way, at work that is.

I believe Pinnacle Studio has this feature. Essentially, there is no freeware version of MPEG2 encoding, because the codec is patented or something.

Well, that's what I thought. I couldn't get a SVCD to play in my cdrom and it kept saying I didn't have the codec. I installed windvd and it could play. So I believe it is included with the software.

Obiviously you didn't read the original post, he isn't trying to play a clip, but rather capture MPEG2 realtime.

Well wouldn't loading the player also load the codec on the PC?

Possibly, but probably not. It's probably just embedded in the software.

This is true (eg You have to buy an addon to nero to burn svcds because the mpeg-2 copyright holder).
