looking for an LCD

Just got rid of my two Sun CRT monitors didnt have space for them in my new apartment.

I'm looking for an LCD now. I'm thinking at least 24", and a verticle resolution around 1200 (or greater). I'm not a fan of widescreen, but its the way of the world. A 16:10 will have to do.

Budget is around $340. I game, so response time is important. And I write firmware and software, hence taller resolutions. Should have this just been in the LCD sticky?

The only LCDs with more then 1200 vert are apples new (27in?) cinema display and the various 30 inch displays

For $340 or less, you're pretty much looking at 24" TN panels, most of which will be 16:9. They'll have worse colors and viewing angles than higher quality IPS and PVA/MVA panels, but they do have excellent response time for games. Check Newegg - just about anything in the 24" category will do, but I'd personally stay away from Acer. Their monitors tend to be extremely cheap in both senses of the word, and often lack even basic adjustments like height.

On the other hand, if you value color and viewing angles highly and are willing to sacrifice a bit of screen size, the NEC EA231WMi is a great choice - e-IPS panel, 23", 1920x1080, VGA / DVI / DisplayPort, and great adjustment options. The response time is plenty fast enough for gaming.

I think im ok with a TN pannel. The IPS you listed looks great, actually. But I think I'd rather go TN with more vertical space.

I'm spotting an ASUS VW266H which looks good. Lots of inputs and it's big. I'm a little unhappy that theres not much in the way of adjustments on the stand. and seemingly no way to attach a different one.

haha, for games and movies thats probably very true. At work, i have a dual ws setup. one of them i rotate so it's tall for writing code

Closer look the asus i listed supports vesa mounts somehow.. so maybe thats the one to go with.

Stop STOP STOP Stop STOP,, ,e-ips is GARBAGE.. h-ips, or s-ips are the only ips as far as i'm concerned.

e-ips is built on TN technology, just say no..

SAVE your money,, it shouldn't be long before you have 500$ from 350,, so please do yourself a favor, and get a REAL computer panel.

Oh jeeze, another IPS elitist.

With every type of monitor technology there is a tradeoff. CRTs are big as shit and nearly impossible to get perfectly strait lines. TNs don't have the most accurate colors. IPSs are expensive and are relatively slow. The unfortunate truth reveals that there will never be a perfect monitor for everyone. Movie enthusiasts will want 16:9 while programmers would prefer 16:10 or even 4:3.

Your "REAL" panel would get smacked upside down, left and right if it tried to compete with my CRTs for what I need them to do. Likewise I'm sure you would be horrified trying to use these for what you do.

OP has set a budget and for what he wants a nice IPS panel is way out of line.

Pretty good H2-IPS 24" monitor is HP ZR24w which cost around 400$.
