Looking for an audio player

I'm a longtime Windows user, and on my PC I use Windows Media Player 11 for video and Zune for audio. On my MacBook I'm mostly content with Quicktime for video (is there a way to queue up a folder of videos to play one after the other?). And although it isn't as bad as the Windows version, I absolutely detest iTunes. Does anyone have an alternative to iTunes?

If you mention why you hate iTunes you might get some alternatives.

As for queuing up videos.... VLC can do playlists and it isn't too bad.

I mainly dislike iTunes because of the kludgy (IMO) interface and a general bad taste it left in my mouth when I used it with my iPod on Windows.

VLC for Mac is _way_ better than VLC for windows... I use VLC for video 🙂

In terms of music, I'm usually very open to free choice, but I'm gonna go ahead and shove iTunes down your throat 😉

Seriously, use it for a while... get used to it. It'll grown on you.

iTunes on Windows and iTunes on OS X are night and day, as is VLC on Windows and on OS X. The OS X version can go to 400% volume, has onscreen controls, is more stable and is all around nicer. It also generally uses less CPU than Quicktime somehow. Probably because GrandCentral and QuicktimeX aren't out yet (I want 10.6 RIGHT NOW)

I get that the OS X versions of iTunes and VLC are better, but they still don't feel "right" to me. I guess I'm looking for something more "Windows-like."

So get Windows XP on your Macbook.

There was no reason to get a Macbook if you wanted "Windows-like" programs in the first place.

I would if:

A) I could get XP3 slipstreamed correctly. No matter whose guide I follow, the installation disc never works, PC or Mac.
B) VirtualBox would let me set XP's resolution to 1280x800. Again, I can't seem to find anything that will fix this.

Wanting something more like Windows also doesn't mean I actually WANT Windows either, hence my reasoning for buying a MacBook. I guess Apple fanboys are touchy after all.

This may seem like a dumb question, but why don't you just install XP SP2 and upgrade to SP3?

I'm a cross platform user and I can't figure out exactly what you mean by being more "Windows-Like".

If you hate iTunes because you're used to Windows Media Player then yeah, it takes a little getting used to. You just gotta bite the bullet and accept that it's not the same. The first couple of versions of iTunes on Windows I absolutely HATED. They completely disorganized the file structure I had and in the end I just had to re-rip all of my CDs. iTunes has come a long way since then and after just accepting that it's the best choice for audio apps on mac, I warmed up to it.

I can't figure out what you mean the "kludgy" interface. I don't want to seem like a pompous Apple jerk, but the interface is so smart that everyone is designing their apps with the same ideas and look in mind. Could you do us the favor of being a bit more specific? I get the general feeling that you don't like it because it's new territory or because there aren't a bunch of dumb shiny things to click (which is how I felt when I started using iTunes.)

I hate to say it, but the selections of audio applications on mac are pretty shoddy because a lot of people have just accepted that they aren't going to best iTunes.

I also have never seen the problem with recent versions of iTunes. It plays music and that's all that really matters, but the interface is easy to use, informative and customisable. iTunes is also awesome for managing a music collection, if you're a bit of a perfectionist like me.

I think you'll just need to make do!
