Looking for advice on what to buy...

Greetings everyone,

This is my first post here and I'm glad to have found such a great resource.

Without further delay, on to my question(s);

I am currently running a 900MHz Athlon T-Bird with 512 MB on an Azus A7V133 with VIA Apollo KT133A chipset. I'm running win98se on a 30 gig WD 7200 ATA100. Video card is 32 meg geforce II MX.

I use it mostly for gamming and internet related stuff.

I've been very happy with my AMD setup so I am considering going with an MSI K7n2G nVidia/nForce2 mobo with an Athlon XP 2400+, 512 MB of DDR333 or 400, MSI GeForce4 Ti4200 128 meg vga.

Basically I want a system that runs a minimum of 2GHz, 512 RAM, and an above average video card, not interested in paying $300 dollars for a graphis card.
I don't want to skimp on the mobo, or memory.

Not sure if I will run win 2k or 98se, not in the mood to pay MS for XP at this point.

So, that's it in a nutshell, with all the new stuff out there any advice from you good people is greatly appreciated in advance.

I think the only recommendations I would make are these:

Go with Windows 2000, especially if you have it already or get Windows XP, it will be much better and more stable than Windows 98.

I looked at the MSI K7N2G-ILSR and decided to wait for the K7N2 Delta-ILSR instead, as I also was going to buy my own graphics card (the MSI GeForce 4 Ti4200-VTD8X), so did not need the IGP nForce2. The Delta's are due to be released this month, so if you can wait, it might pay to do so just so you don't get features you don't need. The only real difference is in the bundle and the support for 400MHz FSB Bartons (due out in May). The possible downside is that as this will be a new board, it may be a bit more costly than the current K7N2G.

[EDIT] Check here for a comprehensive thread at nForcersHQ on what RAM doesn't play well with the motherboard.
