looking for advice on building a new system

Just started doing research. Not sure inbetween this whole Amd & Intel contraversy.....
I,m looking to spend for the most important things, the mobo, & cpu. I dont play many games and may never overclock, but really can't stand waiting for things to load.....

Thinking about an ASUS P4C800E Deluxe, P4 2.6 to 3.0 at 800 fsb. I dont know if this board will utilize the 4000 ram or if i should just go with 3200 ram or a different board....
or something on the amd side that will work with the 64 bit...

Any advice is greatly appreciated.. Thanks!!!!!

just to start out i thought abought getting the western digital 36gb raptor at 10000rpm for the low seek time, i think its at 5.4 . also not sure about a case.. is it necessary to have front, side, & top fans to keep it cool, & is there an advantage to aluminum cases,..
Power with a Anantec 430 true power?? Just so unsure about the whole thing..

about $1400.. or so I can spend more if its needed.....
I know someone that can load all the programing/ operating system I need at no cost so that saves Want the top of the line on board & cpu .... But not so worried about the video, or burners...

I am doing the same build as you, but with a much lower budget lol. Anyway, with $1400 you can build a KILLER setup! But do you need a monitor? I will assume that you don't. Now here are the parts I recommend, and I have done a lot of research for my build, so this can help you.

Motherboard: Abit IC7-MAX3 = $204.99

Its like the Asus P4C800E Deluxe, but IMO its a lot nicer. Personally, since I have a much lower budget, I am getting the Abit IS7, which is a couple steps lower. Link

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2.6C (800MHz Bus with HyperThreading) Retail Box = $175

This CPU has the best price/performance ratio out of the P4s. IMO, I think that the actual real world speed between the 2.6 and the 2.8 isnt much. And between the 2.6 and 3.0, you might see a difference (depending on your current system), but it doesn't warrent the $100 difference. This is just my opinion though. And also, if you ever do decide to overclock, this CPU can hit 3.25Ghz (up the FSB to 250) with the stock retail heat sink/fan! Link

RAM: GeIL Dual-Channel 1GB (2x512MB sticks) PC3500 DDR-RAM = $228

Memory causes a lot of controversy. If you ask 10 different people about what ram they like the best, you would probably get 10 different answers! But this seems to be good ram. Let other people give opinions about this before you buy it though. Link

HDD #1 (For OS and Programs): WD 36GB Raptor 10,000RPM SATA Drive = $109

This is probably one of the fastest drives on the market. People have said that they see a huge increase in speed when using this drive. Programs load faster, windows starts up faster, etc. But since its only 36GB, you only need this drive for windows and programs, not for data etc. Link

HDD #2 (For Data (MP3's, video, etc): WD1200JB (WD 120GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache ATA100 Special Edition) = $99

I own the 80GB version of this drive and I love it. WD is known for their speed and reliability. I have never had a WD drive fail on me yet. And you have a 3year warrenty if it did fail! Link

Case/PSU: Antec SLK3700AMB with the Antec SL350 (SmartPower 350W ATX) = $72 Shipped

I own this case/psu and I love it! The paint quality is amazing, the PSU is stable and holds excellent voltage rails, and it provides for excellent ventalation. There is room for 2 120mm fans, one in the front and one in the back. The back fan is included, and is set up to pull air out of the case (as an exhaust fan). You only need the fan in the front if you want to cool your HDDs. BTW, this is one of the most quiet cases out there. Link

Video Card: ATI Radeon 9000 128MB DDR AGP4X OEM = $69

I own this exact card and since I don't game very much at all, it suits me fine. When it was in my old slow P3 500, I was able to play games such as GTA Vice City, and Unreal Tournament 2003 at medium detail at 1024x768 with no chopiness. So even if you start getting into gaming, this would work alright. But for non-gamers like u and me, it is perfect. I watch a lot of videos (such as recorded TV shows and DVDs), sometimes I even hook up my computer to my TV, and it works great with this. Also, if you get an LCD, it has the needed DVI output, which some cheaper cards lack. Link

Sound: AC97 Onboard Integrated (With SPDIF in and outputs)

This is integrated in the motherboard. IMO, it sounds great! I am quite the audiophile, and when hooked up to my 2.1 speakers, or my 5.1 surround system (powered by a JVC reciever) it sounds great!

Network: Intel CSA Integrated Gigabit LAN (10/100/1000)

Just a normal NIC, but it supports Gigabit LAN also (along with regular 10/100), so you are future proof for this.

DVD-ROM/CD-Writer: Lite-On 48x24x48x16 DVD-ROM/CD-Writer Combo Drive = $54

Just your typical DVD/CD-Writer combo drive. Lite-On is the best brand IMO for optical drives. This DOES NOT burn DVDs though. It reads/writes CDs, and reads DVDs. It is 48x24x48x16 (write/rewrite/cd read/dvd read). It is black, and it looks really nice. Link

Floppy Drive: Samsung Black 1.44MB 3 1/2inch FDD = $7.50

This is just a regular old floppy drive, but its black, so it will match well. Link

That pretty much sums it up! I think this is a nice system. It totals up to $1018.49, which leaves almost $400 for a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, desk, credit card interest, etc. Leave around $20-30 for shipping though, because I only added in shipping for the case. Let me know what you think!

Thanks for responding! Inbetween reading the different magazine articles its hard to choose..... Haven't gotton much help anywhere else..I do need a monitor but wasn't figuring that into the price.. I'll have to read up on the abit motherboard. I just want to make sure i'm getting something really stable. I dont know which boards are more reliable??

As far as ASUS and stability, I havent had much luck. Some people love ASUS, but out of the 4 ASUS boards I have owned, all of them had problems. But then I swapped them, and the problems went away! ABIT is known for stability, even when overclocking! As for a monitor, I bought my 17'' HP Pavilion MX70 monitor for $80 after mail in rebate at BestBuy. If you need a keyboard or mouse, definetly buy Logitech. I own at least 10 Logitech perpherals, and I haven't had a problem with any. I tried Microsoft perpherals once, and they both ended up in the trash (keyboard acted up, mouse just died). As for speakers, look at Creative and Logitech. Both are great!

Ive been spending way too much time trying to figure everything out. Heard about others having problems with asus also.. A retailer at the computer show I went to recently said one out of every five boards has to be replaced.. thats a scary number. Is there any advantage to switching up to 4000 ram and will the abit board utilize it?

If you want to overclock, then having PC4000 ram will help. Otherwise, you should be ok with PC3200. Haha 4/4 needed replacing for me, but 2 were out of warrenty. Oh well.

you said that the IMO is a lot nicer? got a definition for that? On the second hard drive I'm looking to hook up with Serial ATA also, but might wait a few weeks to hook it up. The 36 gig should be enough space for a little while.. and the price might drop before i pick up the second drive.... Hopefully...

I agree on the ASUS reliability. My brothter replaced his last week after about 14 months of service. I have one that is operating fine after 4 years. I prefer Gigabyte boards. They have been rock solid. However, their tech support is nearly non-existent!

Looking at your budget and the price of the one recommended system, I think you would be better off with an Athlon64. Only about 200 more than that other system, but right away will beat that system, and in the near future should pull away easily and be more upgradeable.
