Looking for advice on a gaming laptop

Hi everybody, I'm looking to get a new laptop and I'm kind of lost. I've spent the better part of my life on desktops, but I'm in the Navy and need to get a laptop for mobility's sake. Unfortunately, I know very little about buying laptops, or what would be a reasonable price for a good gaming one. I'm looking to spend between $1-2k(can go a little higher for a really good one), size isn't an issue (although full-size keyboard would be a plus), nor is battery life. I'm stationed at Pearl Harbor and the possibility of being deployed exists, or else I'd get a desktop. I'm open to pretty much any components if it can get me a good gaming rig, and I'd appreciate any input.

The Gateway P-7xxx laptops are very good for the budget gamer. ("budget" may or may not be a 9800m gts). Anandtech did an arcticle about it a while ago.
