Looking for a way to record from line in on sound card

I'm looking for a way to record an audio source from the line in to some kind of sound file (wav, mp3, whatever) on a PC. I would prefer some free / already included software as I only plan to do this once. At the time I doubt I'd have to split the input into tracks, but if I do, I guess a program that could be used to split a sound file into multiple files would be nice as well.

Nero Wave Editor would be fine, and there are oem copies of it all over the place if you don't already have one.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ will do what you need. You can break the captured .wav into sub-files (for your different tracks), and then export them as MP3.
